  • Aliens: Colonial Marines

They released actual footage of the long-in-development colonial marines, and it looks pretty damn cool.

The areas are from the movies, they actually got the set designer from Aliens to work with them for level design, and they actually used the REAL sounds from the movies this time, notably the motion tracker and Pulse Rifle firing sound ()

With 4 player coop and on the fly dropping in and out, I really hope it's the best Aliens game yet.

And lets hope it's not a game like AvP 2010 - we all know how much of a flop that was.

Aliens is my favorite movie ever, and I have been waiting for a game to revisit the movie locations and create the same feel that the movies did since 1998 with the only good AvP game (the first one). There's no OP predators this time so that's a plus.

Best dialogue from the original movie:

Have you ever been mistaken for a man? No, have you ?

I always wondered how can they have technology to trawer thrue hyperspace and still use some low qualoty armor and some 300 years old wapen systems. That dont make sense to me

Ive been pretty excited for this one! I just watched Alien and Aliens. I watched Alien 3 a few months ago. Its not a bad movie on its own, but compared to the first 2 was disappointing.

unfortunately, these shock effects used in the trailer don't work so well in games IMO. It's predictable.

It's a huge difference if you sit in the dark in a cinema with a large screen or in front of a PC. Scare tactics usually fail in a game.

A strength of the original Aliens movie was that the alien was rarely actually seen in full. Can't do that in a game, otherwise you have nothing to shoot... eventually the aliens will become just cannon fodder.

It will never have the same impact again, because gamers are so used to gross monsters these days. It's hard for the alien creatures to compete. Back in the 70s, of course people were screaming in the cinema. But gamers in 2011? Not the same anymore.

And while there can be long stills in a movie to enhance the atmosphere, a gamer becomes bored if there is nothing to click for more than 3 seconds.

                  Very different media.

A previous game titled Aliens: Colonial Marines was developed by Check Six Games and was to be published by Fox Interactive and Electronic Arts for the PlayStation 2 in 2001, but was cancelled before its release. A more traditional first-person shooter, it shared the same subject matter and setting as the upcoming Gearbox-developed game. Its story was to be set between the events of Aliens and Alien 3, concerning a rescue team of Colonial Marines searching for the Sulaco. Despite the similarities in gameplay and story, however, Gearbox has claimed that their upcoming game is unrelated to this early version.[17][18]
On December 11, 2006, Sega announced they had purchased the electronic rights to the Alien franchise from 20th Century Fox.[19] On December 15, Gearbox Software and Sega announced that they were working on a completely new game based on the franchise.[16] In February 2008 the game's title was officially announced as Aliens: Colonial Marines and it was featured as the cover story of Game Informer magazine.[17]
The development team took great pains to recreate the vehicles and settings of the films by using original set designs to recreate the exterior and interior of the Sulaco and LV-426.[16] Concept artist Syd Mead, who had worked on Aliens, was hired to design areas of the Sulaco that did not appear in the film but would be used in the game.[13]
A Shacknews article dated November 21, 2008, reported that the Aliens: Colonial Marines game had been delayed, supposedly because of layoffs at Gearbox Software. However, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford insisted that development on the game continues.[20]
According to a Kotaku article, Sega said that their new Aliens vs. Predator game is to be released in early 2010 would be the first of their Aliens games to be released, meaning that Aliens: Colonial Marines will be sometime afterwards.[21]
At the 2010 Penny Arcade Expo (PAX), Gearbox showed five new screenshots and stated that the game remains a priority for them.[22][23]
In the beginning of June 2011 Gearbox unveiled a teaser trailer and officially announced that Colonial Marines would be presented on E3 2011 and that the game is expected to be released in spring 2012.[24][25]
Looks like this game went through some bullshit to see the light of day.

Actually, i still think the Xeno can hold its own in todays gaming because a lot of designs for the enemies or Aliens in games are pretty terrible compared to the Xenos - and even though AvP 2010 was not scary at all, there were a ton of people who thought it was one of the scariest games they ever played.

The Aliens are bound to become fodder because like you said it just wouldn't work in a game unless it was a silent hill like game. Though even if the aliens aren't going to scare you, they have a couple of elements that can really help the tension of the game: 1 being the motion tracker, and 2 being coop. The pinging getting higher pitched as the aliens enclose around you can make for some pretty tense moments, even if the Xenos themselves don't scare you, and 2. having coop and the pressure of surviving against many xenos, and keeping your mates alive could make it very tense, especially if your teammate using the motion tracker gets pulled into a vent

I know they could make it fail terribly, and this is all speculation but I'm hopeful, seeing as how I don't scare easily (I think the xenos look cool and love the first 2 movies) and almost no games are actually scary to me - one game that I play today and still remains scary is the original AvP PC game in 1998 - the aliens nimbleness along with the fact that they can come from basically anywhere (it's randomized) and the marine being so fragile, as well as the locations from the films being recreated with very similar atmosphere, made it one of the scariest games I've ever played.

It's one of the few games that manages to make me jump still.

Plus the Facehuggers were just plain cool in that game:

I'm sorry, but the bar has been set pretty fn high with the latest AvP release.

                          [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nru4mhPF-oo]Aliens vs. Predator DX11 Trailer - YouTube[/ame]

I played the game early, and my only gripe was the fn game was just so damned buggy for my dual gpu solution to high end gaming, I never reinstalled the game. I enjoyed most of all the sheer graphic advancement from the first AvP game. I didn't play the inbetween games....

I would agree. Except after playing Dead Space and Dead Space 2. You would go Over 5 minutes at a time without even seeing a monster. But the atmoshpere was done in a way that kept it very interesting. The original AVP was also good at this. The environment makes a huge difference also.
