  • Quake 3 Pre-Beta Gameplay

I done some searching and found this user w/ two videos that are of the pre-beta Quake 3. If you look closely you can see that the graphics are much better and the textures are bumpmapped.

dear.... what rock have you been living under? quake3 arena was from 1999, and ther has been a quake4 too in 2005

you are a bit behind on facts, to be precise 12 years
    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
    > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

I dont see any bumpmapping, heck its all b/w washed out over contrast.

Metch was talking about spitterface being miserable...

The CPL Extreme Annihilation was a QuakeII event so i really doubt they had a running Alpha version of Q3 at that time.

Sometimes you just cant believe everything someone spits on your screen.

It's actually real, you can see some shots of q3dm4 during quake 3's development -- the shots match perfectly. they focused on a darker and gothic theme like quake 1 and the final was much more cheesy gothic theme with tech in it. and the textures in the alpha and beta were actually higher quality, in the retail they compressed them. you can actually tell when you look at the textures and compare them.

i was just joking warlock about that you been living under a rock no need to get pissed

anyway, i dont see any bumpmapping either. beside, the first game to feature bumpmapping came out in 2000, which was a year after quake3 came out, so i highly doubt a pre-beta of quake3 wouldve had bumpmapping

beside, i agree with rook. and i also wanna add something to why you shouldnt believe the vid. look at the date at which the vid was added: 5july 2011. while the event was held at '99. why would someone wait 12year before uploading a vid?

so i also think its a fake. actually i have a high-res texture pack for quake 3, it looks like the one who filmed it used that

You guys seem oblivious to history and also rather paranoid. It is easily verified that an early version of Quake 3 was played at that event. The graphics in the video are exactly what Quake 3 looked like back then. Why would anyone bother faking this?

Wow, are you trolling? Look for the pre-beta images of q3dm4, it matches exactly. And everything else matches the other early images (weapons, items, effects, etc.). And why would he have to upload it? You're lucky you even saw a playing video of early Quake 3.

It's also a known fact that Quake 3 began development in 1998, so yes they would've had a working alpha version.

Guess you folks never ran Tenebrae Quake
Since it had bump mapping in Q1 since like 1998

Oh, one year prior to Quakes source release?

Maybe you ask this guy: [ Endarchy / Industri - Being re-built (again) on the Doom 3 engine ]

While we're on the subject of Quake 3, I really want to point this out... I don't remember anyone stating this earlier... I'm sick and tired of people complaining, "But Quake 3 only has deathmatch and capture the flag." These people need to look at the bigger picture. Quake 3 does have MANY game types if people are willing to do some more exploration. You need to take into consideration the different types of environments: fog, lava, water, toxic slimes, void, etc. When you think about it, the fog map, or "fatal instinct" map could actually be considered as a game type. There are so many combinations; the possibilities are almost endless. [Hopefully I didn't slide off-topic, but sometimes I feel that I have to defend Quake 3.]

Sorry for reviving an old thread. I've actually been a lurker here for a long time, but only today I spotted a thread about videos that I posted on youtube a year ago.

                            Wow. Just wow.

Yes, those videos are real. I've had them on my hard drive since March 27th, 1999. I don't see any bumb-mapping myself. Some of the pre-release textures might have been slightly higher-res, but I have no idea. The website I got the vids from at the time also posted a dozen slightly better quality screencaps:

You can view all of them and other q3dm4 beta shots here: Q3DM4 beta pics

So why did I upload those videos? Why does anyone upload any videos? I did it for posterity. I found these two on my old hard drive and figured I'd share them with the world. There are a few early Quake 3 videos from 1998/99, but those have been uploaded to youtube already. These two weren't, so here we are. You may take off your tinfoil hats.

                            I might have a few other videos I haven't seen posted anywhere else...like this Quake 3 mo-cap one: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2jxWu4Xgac]Quake 3 - Motion Capture - Xaero - YouTube[/ame]
