  • Just wondering...

I remember the feud between Unreal Tournament and Quake 3. I was wondering: Did the people from idsoftware look at UT and think to themselves, "Damn! In Quake 3, we should have included assault and domination."? Did the creators of UT think to themselves, "If only we could have added acceleration pads to UT... That would have really been nice."?

I think that UT and Q3 are both amazing games. But I find competition very interesting. While we're on the subject of competition, a few more questions come to mind... Did anyone quit idsoftware and decided to work for UT's company? Did anyone quit UT's company and decided to work for idsoftware? I would appreciate it if you could answer my questions.

It wasn't really a fued between Q3A and UT; more a case of fanboy tribalism and picking sides.

Actually, I didn't choose a side. I gave both games a fair analysis. In a nutshell, UT provided the best FPS multiplayer experience in the 90's. Q3 provided the best deathmatch experience in the 90's. I'm just saying... I'm not showing off or anything. I'm sure that there were some people who gave both games a fair judgment. But then again, there was some biased tribalism as well.

                I agree

UT just had better multiplayer in general

Q3 had better DM, and a better feel to the gameplay. But I was never a fan of the gun design in Q3.

                I love both though.

I agree with Bloodshot and Clown, I started off as a UT nut and then found my way into Q3 and such. The problem was with UT2003 was that Epic tried to mimic Quake3 too much -- it's pretty apparent when you look at the transition from UT to UT2003 that there's plenty of Q3 inspiration.

I still think UT has the best weapon arsenal in a FPS to date. It also has some simple but killer features...

*alternative firemodes are awesome, combos even more so
*pushing people into hazards grants you kills and feels great haha
*using elevators to gain momentum for jumps is awesome
*dodging and walldodging is fun, you can also dodge upwards on slanted edges which I think is cool.
*crouching will make you stick to ledges -- no falling off ledges
*jumpboots are interesting for map design.

When it comes to multiplay I do think UT has the edge, though Q3 does indeed have the best deathmatching.
