  • If you bought a Xbox360 or a PS3....

...and you decide you want the NEXT generation of Console, maybe you should consider buying a fn PC instead.

Consoles are effectively becoming dumbed down yesterdays PC tech, if the rumors are true ,which typically the pan out to be slightly true in most cases or 1 grain of salt of truth, with 20 grains of nonsense around it.

It makes sense to utilize current already developed technologies that are availible, I find it awesome that both companies see that AMD's pricepoint to performance will be most likely utilized in the next gen consoles.

One this for sure, this adoption of PC based tech into the console gaming systems SHOULD subtract the shitty translation of console to pc ports of games, and developing for ONE should ultimately make porting to console or pc fairly easy compared to current generations.

very much agree on you, modern consoles are 10years behind on pcs in what they can do graphic-wise and technology-wise.

i hate how games get dumbed down all the time cuz they're shabby console-ports and thus we pc-gamers miss all the awesome eye-candy we could have cuz consoles cant handle that eye-candy and thus the port of the game also doesnt have eye-candy cuz its a shitty console-port.

i fucking hate consoles for that their graphics look so shitty compared to pc, the games on them look like how pc-games looked like 10years ago, and people go all like 'omg wow, thats so amazing looking...'

wake up fuckers, thats not amazing, 10years ago it was, for nowadays its not
    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?

I played MW3 on a friend's PS3 once. The textures had quality similar to GLQuake. The effects and whatnot were alright though. Consoles have fuck all for video memory, so they make really low res textures so the hardware doesn't get bogged down.

Yes, exactly. My thoughts with this whole consoles are going to assimilate PC tech (the crumbs of todays technology, the stale crumbs of yesterday are absorbed by console developers).

Console's are about to become even more so than now, dumbed down versions of PC's. With this possible rumor of the Xbox720 and PS4 are going to utilize older technologies of the PC market, it just doesn't make sense PRICE wise to even bother with a console anymore.... Launch price of a PS3 was $499-$599 dollars, 200-300 dollars more than the previous PS2. Given that every next generation console demands a higher price then the previous generation.... Do the math. For the price that the next consoles demand, it's just simply going to be easier to get a PC.

I wouldn't even have a problem with the shitty hardware to tell the truth if they produced games that were actually interesting.

But instead everything's being turned into either clones of halo or call of duty.

Major franchises like Fallout and TES are being made ridiculously easy and accessible and are losing playability and depth.

So they don't have amazing hardware, and they don't have many creative games either - that's why I barely touch my PS3 ever, save for a few titles. The commercial market is very stale and formulaic because it's all about the $$$

And even if they were somehow able to make next gen consoles with great hardware at a decent price - unless they make it fully customizable like a PC they will be easily outdated when a decent PC dev comes along and utilizes current and future technology (like Crytek did with Crysis back in 07).

And if they are upgradeable like a PC hardware-wise, that defeats the purpose of the "easy to optimize for" philosophy that so many devs opt for (since it's only 2 hardware sets currently), and it alienates simpler users in the long run since 1. they might not want to upgrade and 2. PCs are pretty popular now so that will probably be a pretty similar alternative. (unless they somehow manage to streamline the upgrading process extremely well, in which case hardware devs will probably adapt that in some way for future PCs anyway)

Its always been this way. But some people just wont get a pc to play games on. In a perfect world, every pc game would run just like it is supposed to. But we all know that doesnt happen. Alot of people could care less about troubleshooting and just want to play. For those, the console is perfect.

And yes, as someone said. Console games for the most part are garbage. But there are some great ones here and there.
If you see 427 playing Quake thats me.

I Love both PC and console games, It just so happens I also love money so instead of spending $200+ at a time up upgrade my work PC 've decided to let my PC get "caught in 2005" performance wise. Just not enough time to play games I really like unless they have fasst paced jump in & out style game play. Hence why I've moved 90% to consoles for gaming and only play older nostalgic games on PC.. I just don't have $1,000 laying around to catch up with games today I also don't have time to keep up with the 7000,000 variations of hardware anymore. If PCs were more like consoles and had a more straight forward feel to them that would be awesome.. Like if you COULD upgrade the console's performance when a new upgrade is available... That's pretty much a PC but we can already do this with consoles today with storage units and case fans.

The line between Console and PC is fading but they're still 2 sides.

I miss the days of NES = Mario, Wang PC = black&green banking system PC.

Now I don't know if my Xbox is going to have Kratos flying around out of his element or what...

                    Sh!ts all wonky these days.

Needing $1,000 to build a PC capable of running todays games is far from the truth. AMD APU w/ Discrete GPU = completely doable between a Quater to Half the cost of a 1K gaming rig.

Nothing inherently wrong with consoles and they do offer several advantages for both developers and users. As a developer you get to target identical hardware in all of your customer base, meaning that you can do hardware-specific optimizations. You also get more direct access to the hardware, with a much thinner API/abstraction layer. Both of those can more than make up for the lower overall power (why is it that people think that raw clock-speed, for example, is the be-all and end-all of performance?)

As a user you get the benefits of the above, together with a more-or-less plug-and-play user experience. The PC ownership experience is definitely not for everyone; the constant patching, driver updates, incompatibilities, crashes, tweaks and fiddles may keep an enthusiast happy, but the casual gamer just wants to slap in a disk and play the damn game without any of that.

All of those translate into a better all-round package for everyone, and a higher chance of, for example, avoiding something like the Rage fiasco.

What sucks is console gaming, in particular the overall dumbing down and "modern shooter disease" crap. But there are signs of a backlash against that, and there's only so much CoD assembly-line churn people will be willing to stomach. The realisation that you've just bought the exact same game all over again for the 10th time may be slow in coming, but it will come.
