Why dont you take a look into the thread with the same topic here: click
There are many engines available for Q2.
The devs are almost all russians.
They do a wonderful job and the engines are great and full of awesome features.
      Unfortunately the game itself isnt...

There is a complete pack (with high res textures and stuff included) from Quake2XP.

Dont let the dead links fool you. There have been several URL changes in the recent past. You will still find most of them.

I really enjoy the Berserker Quake. It has great features and texture packs. I used weapon models from Quake 2 Evolved which is another great option. Here is the link for Berserker..it is in Russian so you may need to use google translate as I did.

It depends on what you want from an engine. Do you want a classic look/feel but just fixed up to be more compatible with modern machines? Or do you want loads of add-ons and modifications?

Ah come on, the game isn't worse than Quake 1 really. It's practically identical gameplay just with more cyborgs and less D&D, fantasy, zombies and Lovecraft in it.

The level design is actually similarly good/classic as in Quake 1, just differently themed.

Personally I even think Q2 multiplayer is more interesting than Q1 multiplayer, because Q2 weapons have some rock-paper-scissors thing going whereas in Q1, the guy with RL / Shaft wins over the guy with boomstick, end of story.

The main thing that bugs me about Q2 is how enemies don't become nonsolid upon death, so they block your movement.

The two games are actually almost identical only Q1 has cooler monsters and setting, and Q2 has that stupid solid corpses problem.

Even the Q2 soundtrack isn't bad.

No and yes. It is not the same gameplay, just try a deathmatch for example, it plays totaly different. For me Q1 has the best handling ever. Q3 ist not that bad but Q2 sucks in this case.

That is why I love Q1 and dont like Q2.
It is all about the ambience. future vs fantasy.

And that is why I love dungeon crawlers where you hold a torch in your hand and a sword or magical weapon in your other hand. The mages book is always close at hand to blast away hordes of demons with a fireblast.
                Uups, ich schweife ab...

Yes, gamewise Q1 and Q2 are very similar.
But sometimes very small things make it a personal big difference.

A lot of the "Quake II sux" arguments amount to little more than "Quake is better because it's Quake", which is a fairly bizarre circular reasoning.

In purely technical terms Quake is badly broken and needs heavy investment to make it work. In gameplay terms Quake II is a little slower and has different weapon balance but is otherwise the same game. In graphical terms Quake II is a very very minor step up from Quake and contains nothing that can't be easily enough ported to Quake if you're so inclined. For art and asset quality Quake II is so far ahead - a better palette selection, better modelling, better on-screen layout, better map design; Quake was the game where they were feeling out the possibilities, Quake II was the game where they knew what they were doing, and it shows (in both cases). (Aside: it's fair to say that "feeling out the possibilities" can result in more interesting creations that a more conservative "know what you're doing" scenario, but it can also result in more broken creations, so it cuts both ways. If Quake was better for it, it was by accident, not by design.)

That leaves us with the more nebulous factors; matters of "style", "atmosphere", etc. Quake is definitely more low-key, creepier, more subtle. Quake II is big and loud and in your face. Preferring one over the other doesn't make one "better"; it just means that it's the one you like more.

Yeah, the weapon balance is different, but for single player both games can be reduced to "shoot everything that moves, press buttons and find keys", and the weapons are overall similar in style (shotguns, rocket launchers, rapid fire weapons) and even the monster AI is famously suicidal in both games.

So purely on a mechanical level, there is a great similarity.

Multiplayer is more similar to Quake 3 than Quake 1, but it's mainly the weapon balance and the nerfed rocket launcher (again for balance reasons). The Q2 mission packs introduce some very interesting stuff to multiplayer btw such as the spheres.

Q2 is more similar to Q1 than to any other game except DOOM.

less than 5seconds on Google.com , then less than 2 seconds on Youtube. Took more time typing this post than it did navigating the www.

Clients that worked for me are Yamagi Quake 2 and AprQ2. Also FTEQW supports Q2.

Edit; just tried again, Yamagi Q2 works fine, had to do a snd_restart but otherwise just works (Ubuntu, OSS4 sound).

My main problem with Q2 was that I found the game quite repetitive in it's environmental design. Coming from Quake and Doom that had different sets of visuals to break things up, Q2 stuck to a singular style throughout - which is okay, but I wasn't particularly a fan of that style. Plus I didn't find the enemies that satisfying to fight either for some reason.

I still like it a lot, but I just like Q1 a whole lot more.

The grenade guys pissed me off. They would pump like 3 grenades in the time it takes you to pump just over 1 grenade in Q1. In quick burts of 3 , that was annoying 2 me

And I hated the Lithium hook, compared to Q1 hook. I didnt know wtf that was all about.
