  • Painkiller

    Hello,

Just saw that they will release another Painkiller at the end of october this year.
    Painkiller: Hell & Damnation

I think there is no other game where they made so many "new" version to squeeze the money out of the customers.

But I am a big fan of the original fantasy-style of Painkiller with the unique weapons and ideas. It really was a gem and brought new breath into the genre. Also the gigantic bosses was a perfect idea.
The fact that they redo the same game again and again (with everytime less levels) makes it quite boring though.

The masses/hordes of enemies like in the game with a "serious" name can also be boring if the level design does not match.

Anyway, this time they seem to use a different engine (Unreal 3) and kept faithful to their original gameplay.

Nevertheless, I am a great fan of the horror/fantasy like ambience (like old churches, etc) and monsters and the VERY unique sounds they use in Painkiller.
The sounds are a real ambience booster to the mystical idea of the game...

Hmm, the screens doesn't look like this will run on my old rig. But well, i still have the original + battle out of hell on this rig so i could play from time to time. But looks good, maybe they make a 100% copy with updated graphics...

Painkiller is good, but it has a great flaw for me. Puzzle bosses... come on.

Painkiller is kinda boring. It has a very good soundtrack (the ambient musics, not the "fight" versions that are just generic metal) and beautiful scenarios but it plays like Serious Sam: enter an small arena that closes around you, strafe-shoot-strafe-shoot, move to the next closed box/arena, get locked there and repeat.

And what is the problem? It is like saying that chess is boring because you have to move a piece, await that other player does the same and repeat.

Beside Serious Sam is famous for its large levels and it is one of the best shot-n-up ever.

I just prefer games that don't lock you every chunk of the map and trow some enemies, that is, I don't like its pace. Also if you want to compare the two, on chess you define your moves, on Painkiller you always move your pieces where the game wants you to in a predetermined sequence.

If you think about it, it's closer to CoD than it is to Quake or Doom (except the speed of the protagonist).

It depends how you see it, in Painkiller you move freely in a small area instead in chess you have at most 218 possible half-moves to choice and usually it much less.

Anyhow, I do not want to bicker. I see your point now, if you do not like the pace... it is not the game for you. After all I also do not like it much for its the puzzle bosses. I never continued after the Swamp Monster even after I understood what I was supposed to do.
