I was going to share this under the Hexen III petition thread, but it got too big, so I created my own...
I thought that Hexen and HexenII were great multiplayers, so was Rune. I also loved the multiplayers in the Quakes (not 4) and Unreal Tournament but after a while you get tired of getting splattered all over the wall when you get hit by the rail gun. Sure you can take 2 or 3 missile hits but not the rail gun slugs. On the flip side, it was fun splattering others.
I stopped playing UT2004 because everytime you spawned, you were tele-fragged (getting fragged by someone shooting a teleporter at you and transporting right when you walked over it) I sometimes was able to hide and watch all these teleport discs flying through the air. That's when I stopped playing FPS for a long time.
Hexen/II and Rune had the 'up close and personal' approach. Sure there were spells and ranged weapons, but lots of swords and axe action! Single player is great! Running, shooting, hitting buttons isn't everything (but its still fun.
)
Last month, I started getting out my old FPSs. I found a disc I made called 'Ode to FPS' some 7 years ago (gosh I'm getting old) It had Wolf3d, Spear of Destiny, Doom, DoomII, TNT, Plutonia, Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Quake MP1 and MP2, Quake II, Quake II MP1 and MP2, Hexen II, Heretic II, Return to Castle Wolfenstine and what FPS collection would be complete without the Duke! I had almost all the same engines that are active today, just older versions. Doomsday, Darkplaces, Apqr2, UQE, DOSBOX (Wolf3D) and some that just ran as they did out of the box.
I can't believe the work some people have done. (If you don't have jobs in the gaming or graphic arts industries, get your resumes out there!) I've collected almost 23GBs of Quake MODs, Textures, and more. Quite a bit from some part of a DVD. My Quake setup I play is 2.6GB and is awesome! Hexen II never looked better. Quake II...its hard to choose because each engine brings something new. I still play Wolf3D and Dooms in their original graphics but now at 1920x1080 and no scanlines. I'm using the map book that came with my Wolf3D/SoD FLOPPIES which I still have! Unfortunately, I don't have the 286 12MHz (on turbo!), 1MB RAM, 40MB hard drive and sound blaster.
My thanks to all who have made these games look great! I almost want to play with the original graphics but I just can't with all the great work that has been done.
