  • Doom vs. Heretic

I think that this is a very fair comparison... Both games used the id Tech 1 engine, both games were released in the early 90's, both games were critical for the success of idsoftware...

Doom going up against Heretic... Which game is better? Let's break this down...

Doom had better weapons than Heretic. Doom's weapons delivered more damage. However, Heretic's monsters were more challenging. (Not to mention, they were scarier!) Some of Doom's monsters were actually funny. For example, the pink demon made me laugh. Nonetheless, Heretic featured some elements that Doom did not have. For example, Heretic featured the ability to fly. I always thought that Doom was lacking a few points...

In the end, there can only be one winner and I pick Doom. I kid you not. I congratulate Heretic for being a strong competitor, but in terms of emotions, Doom appears almost complete. Doom scared many players, no question about that. But Doom also featured some comedy. Heretic did not feature any form of comedy. So, in the end, Doom wins the prize.

heretic imo would actually win from doom.

the heretic monsters and weapons were just way more epic imo, and i always prefered the medieval theme over the scifi base theme of doom. ive always been more attracted to medieval stuff rather then scifi stuffs.
also main reason why i love hexen too. i love medieval stuffs and monsters wizards centaurs imps and that kinda stuff

doom and heretic are both awesome, but heretic has a lot of awesome things doom lacked.

like i especially loved the tome of power, which made weapons more powerfull.

and theres a lot more variety in heretic, whereas doom stays the same all the time.

it happens to me a looot more often that i feel like picking up heretic again cuz of all the awesomeness rather then i think about picking up doom.

also one last thing about why heretic is more kickass... crossbow with exploding arrows ftw

also funny as hell... egg morphum... in what other game can you turn the enemies into a chicken?
or even funnier, get turned into a chicken
    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
    > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

But you have to use the egg morphum in the first place... You have to do a little bit of work in order to get some comedy. In Doom, you don't have to do any work in order to laugh. The pink demon is priceless. The pink demon just comes out of nowhere. But I appreciate your opinion, I can definitely see what you mean... From time to time, I keep on wanting to play Heretic. Heretic is addictive.

        I pick Heretic.

There is that thing, that I prefer fantasy/medieval over sci-fi, but if I dont take that into account:
-Heretics weapons were more interesting because of Tome Of Power, which gives absolutely unique effect to each weapon, giving new options how to deal with situation.
-Heretic has plenty of artifacts which you can keep in the inventory and things like polymorph egg were simply awesome (there is also your funny factor RL Clown )
-Heretic has more interesting and challenging enemies. While I loved Doom bosses, you could defeat them very easily. Compare Cyberdemon to Maulotaur or Spidermaster Mind to DSparil (there wasnt even fight with the spider)
-Also flying and some newer gameplay additions, like you could look up and down.

If I compare to Doom 2, it has more interesting level design and new monsters were cooler than the old ones.

But I dont try to say that Doom is bad or anything. Heretic is superior, but they are both great classics. Although the reason why Doom was far more famous was not only because it was first, but people simply prefer shooting from shotguns and rocket launchers rather than from Wands and Maces(what may be the reason why fantasy/medieval settings is no longer present in the shooters).

PS.:RL Clown, when I first played Doom, I was 7 I think. When pinky attacked me from the back I nearly crapped my pants, so I couldnt laugh at him ever after

For me, Doom wins. I prefered the guns Doom had. I had the shareware version of Heretic, but I didn't play it for very long. In a fantasy setting I'd rather play Ultima or some old SSI RPG. I want my FPS to have a shotgun. No shotgun, no Inky
The worst thing I can be is the same as everybody else. I hate that.

As long as it has magic, fantasy ambience and weapons that shoots magical projectiles, I love it.
Now you know which one I prefer
But thank god, it is all a personal liking thing and we are all individuals.
If we wouldnt, some indie games would never be sold.
And Legend of Grimrock has been sold a LOT

I think Doom has superior level design and artwork tbh.

I'm a fan of both games for different reasons.

I agree with the cheetah, Doom's level design work is a testament to great mapping, more so than I can say about Heretic/Hexen - now, I also feel like this is because of the environment that the games take place in...

Besides that, I always enjoyed the dark-medieval style like splitterface was saying, so I'm always a little bias to Heretic/Hexen

Which is funny, because I like Heretic 1 more than I do Heretic 2, but I like Hexen 2 more than I do Hexen 1

I felt Heretic 1 captured that dark medieval essence better than 2 did, Heretic 2 felt more like a sci-fi twist, like something I'd see out of a B-Rated TV show! The game was awesome, I enjoyed it, but Heretic 1 really made me feel more like I was delving into powers from Hell.

Hexen 2 was the same deal for me, it captured the darkness better, the Gothic beauty so to speak... If there is one thing I can say about Hexen 1 I did like better than 2, it was the weapons and items, they felt more epic in my opinion

That's my quick run down, sorry I didn't go into more detail, been busy lately
+Rep! I'm going to the top!

Silverspring was actually very atmospheric and well designed, pity that the rest of the game lost that.

PC gaming for me started with Heretic 1 shareware, at about midnight in a darkened apartment whilst everyone else was sleeping! Man, I just remember how creepy that was, and I kept looking over my shoulder to see if "something" was "there", LOL.

After that we played Doom(2) mostly for deathmatch and not single play. The next full game I played was Hexen, and I loved that every bit as much as that Heretic demo. The hub system was cool and frustrating at times.

I'd choose Doom though... no wait, Heretic, yeah! Well, nah.. maybe Hexen or Hexen 2, man... Nope definitely Doom, but... meh, never mind... I suck at these things!!! I never get it "right" hahaha
Name's damage_inc, and killing is my business. Don't worry though, it's nothing personal! Oh wait... maybe it is

Yeah, hub system was great idea introduced in Hexen, but in first game it was a bit too much. Did anyone actually completed first hub without cheats?
But in Hexen 2 they made the hub system perfectly. It was even non linear.

                          erm... of course i did
ive never ever used cheats to play out a game myself

i always want to first play out a game at least once without cheats.
playing out a game with cheats is lame, theres no feeling of accomplishment in that at all imo.

                            @splitterface

Sometimes I enjoy the story more than the actual gameplay! Which mean I'll cheat through the whole damn game, hehe :-P

An example of this was "Vampire The Masquerade : Redemption". At that time the visuals were splendid and the voice overs, along with the story, were great. But damn I just couldn't stand having party members that I had to make sure "fed" enough to stay alive. So I CHEATED every step of the way just to watch the story unfold, it was still a good time.

Otherwise, I would have left it alone to die the never played again/finished death!!! Most games I try not to cheat but there are times... grrr...
