  • The 90's = The Golden Era

The 90's was the greatest time for first-person shooters. Let's face it... There will never be another Doom; there will never be another Heretic. There will never be another Hexen; there will never be another Duke Nukem 3D. There will never be another Half-life. There will never be another Quake. The 90's was all about gameplay... Graphics were minor details. A toast to the 90's...

It's really in the eye of the beholder... Truth be told, Quake1 was really "All about it the graphics" . They created a beast of a engine for the time that exhibited graphic capability unseen before and had almost zero storyline. They gave us text for an ending fi. E1M7 was the height of Q1's single player experience in my opinion.

I wouldnt say that graphics were minor detail, it was always important, but back than the gameplay didnt have to do so many compromises because of eye candy. And lets face it, even Quake/Hexen 2 had to do a lot of compromises and were not that successful sequels.

But I agree about being best period, FPS genre for me ended sometimes between 98 and 2000. What nowadays is produced as a top FPS games is different genre. And I dont believe we will see another classic shooter from any developer, no Doom, no Blood, no Hexen. Actually, I believe this is the problem behind the problematic development of Doom 4. Surely ID wanted to satisfy both old and new players, but that is not possible, because of so many differences in the genre(as I said, it is not the same genre).

Personally I dont play FPS games (newer ones) for a long time. I tried the latest Wolfenstein, but even with hard difficulty mod it was ridiculously easy (except for the last battle, which I think was absolutely great)

My heart gets warm when reading the games you mentioned.
I think that is why we are here, instead of the CoD forums
It is the vibe of the classic games that is blowing through these forum halls.

But even though we are a dying breed, I still have faith.

The 90's were a great counter culture decade, not quite up to the level of the 1960's and early 70's, but the video games are a reflection of that time. Call of Duty and Halo has brought a mass market appeal of video games, and has turned the rich creamy butter into plain old margarine, watered down for mass appeal.

Just kidding (kind of). Looking at it objectively though, you have to admit we get kind of a rose tinted glasses effect when playing Quake. I recently tore my nephew away from Minecraft and Halo to play a cooperative game of Quake over LAN and I could tell he was bored to tears, but he was at least polite and considerate enough to lie to me and say he liked it (it was a lie told not to hurt my feelings, so all is forgiven).
None of my other buddies can't stand to play Quake as it's too old in design-- they would rather play Call of Duty. One friend complained about the rocket launcher being the go-to weapon for Quake, and that at least Call of Duty has some variety in powerful weapons. The same friend rolls his eyes whenever I mention Quake. "Oh god not that again-- why do you have such a hard-on for that piece of shit?" I retorted, "well I guess it could be worse. I could be paying 60 dollars every year for the same game painted with a different color and new box art."
