What display adapter/video card are you using?
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display and click the Settings tab, it shows you the exact one.

Maybe try a driver update (clicking advanced in the settings tab and doing update driver sometimes works).
I might add, updating a driver is not a "no risk" proposition. You might considering trying JoeQuake, QRack or DarkPlaces first and seeing if those clients have the problem before doing that.
All of those clients are in Files --> Quake Clients on this site.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

Potential responses:
1. It's not a bug, it is a "feature". I wish I had that.
2. The problem is you aren't supposed to use the "quit" command, you are supposed to stay connected to a server.
3. Dude? Wherez your taskbar?
4. I'm sorry, what did you say, I kept staring at how cool your Windows theme is and wasn't paying attention.
I don't know. I can think of 2 or 3 engine developer types that stop in here one or twice a day and might see your post and actually have the answer.
I've been shocked more than once by an engine developer actually knowing the answer to a very bizarre question.
Maybe someone has seen this and knows, I sure don't. Never heard of this issue before, makes me curious as to what/why it occurs.
You might try one the other engines like JoeQuake/QRack/DarkPlaces. JoeQuake with the stuff turned off looks like old GLQuake, and QRack and DarkPlaces are very nice engines. All engines seem to react differently to video cards problems.
If it bothers you too much, you could always Win ProQuake it.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

Spirit raises a very good point
Maybe the way Quake or OpenGL works isn't sending the appropriate message to Windows to release the screen real estate/terminate the process or what not.
Quake may not be compatible with it (Quake is old!).Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.
