  • New to quake 1, need some mod recommendations

    I'm looking for the absolute must have/play mods for quake 1! Something that is still fun, even today.

    I found a few already but I'd like to save some time and get some recommendations from you long time players.

    Mods I already have:
    -QuakeHD pack - seems to be the best graphics enhancement mod there is, correct me if I'm wrong.
    -EpiQuake

    No, this is the best graphics mod:

      However that Epsilon is 90% Seven's SMC mod
      The Quake HD is about 20% I wonder if your running the 1.3 in comparison.
      I would like to know how you think they compare after you try the Epsilon.

        I tried the epsilon build, here's my first impression vs the quake hd pack:

        The epsilon build at first seems brighter, but this is more than compensated with the huge contrast between shadows and light. I think it makes the game more atmospheric, I like that, but I also realise it can hurt gameplay in some situations. The textures also seem to be better, and the weapons having shadow effects is also nice. Many effects are better than the hd pack, like the green attack that those flying manta thingies do (don't know what they're called), but some effects do seem to go a little overboard. Overall I find the epsilon build to be better looking, but there are a few things where the quake hd pack still does better. For starters, it is also available for the expansion packs, which is a huge plus. And one thing I really dislike about the epsilon build is that sometimes you can't gib the corpses of dead enemies, which really sucks! I love doing that... Not only that but the gibs have a little more detail than the ones in the hd pack, you can see a ribcage and a head, while on the hd pack you just see some generic pieces of bloodied meat, however the transition from corpse to ribcage and head doesn't make much sense, it's too abrupt, the ribcage is always the same size, don't matter how huge the monster that originated them was, and I also think it would look better if there were also a few pieces of meat like in the hd pack. Overall gibbing is much more satisfying in the hd pack.

        So, I find the epsilon build better in some areas but the hd pack is still pretty good and isn't far behind. It's not unlikely that I will end up using the hd pack just because of the gibbing, but for now I'll keep both in my hard-drive.

        Any more mod recommendations guys?

          play multiplayer netquake, honest recommendation.

          RuneQuake and Clan Arena are good spots to get started with some constant opponents that will challenge you.

          RuneQuake might leave you confused though, but yeah. Multiplayer is a great aspect of Q1 that is always ignored now days, everyone wants to glamorize their Q1 for singleplayer but rarely does multiplayer get dusted off.

            We have a sunny summer day currently and default sliders position in the options menu in qhd doesn't provide enough contrast, but...

            Options -> Game Brightness 1.5
            Options -> Brightness 1.25
            Options -> Gamma 1.25
            Options -> Customise Lightning -> Realtime Lightmaps 0

            … and the lighting became exactly as "atmospheric" as in Epsilon
            The textures also seem to be better
            Check the third icon: click
            The weapons having shadow effects is also nice.
            What do you mean ?
            Many effects are better than the hd pack, [...], but some effects do seem to go a little overboard.
            Quake has a bit minimalistic style and toned down effects were meant to preserve some of it and increase performance of the most heavy ones.
            It is easy to change them too. How are you supposed to know how ? From the included readme and taking a look into autoexec.cfg.
            You are not forced to stick with the default settings, there was an effort put into making it all easily adjustable and expandable.

            Epsilon is a bit outdated, since there were made some, minor and not immediately visible improvements since it was updated last time. There are also few minor glitches in the packages left unfixed and many textures are converted to jpg format, it only adds some compression artefacts, no performance benefits. There are also four “performance presets”. The way these presets are implemented makes it more complicated to update/modify than it is to assemble a new compilation from scratch.

            My biased opinion ? QHD is better because it can be both and more, just RTFM and try the original game first anyway.

            Quake HD: Embrace the decline and have some guilty pleasure with it, or join a club for monocled gentlemen at quaddicted and play Quake the way it's meant to be played.

              _Smith_ I've followed all of your advice and... I'm sold! Really excellent work! I can customize everything easily and there is a vast array of options, very nice! Seems like I won't be needing the epsilon build anymore.

              I have a few questions about the pack though:
              -What exactly are the "e2m6_full" files? The original release by id was incomplete, is that it?
              - and what about "HUDz_transparent _sbar_qrp" and "IPz_Rocketbox_Rouhis_Sean"? I've read the manual and I don't see any reference to them.
              -Why the "-sndspeed 44100" on the bat files for "Quake_Classic"? Are the engine defaults not accurate?

              EDIT: I can't believe the amount of effects available!! The community did a great job This is freakin awesome!

                I had never played quake online so I had to check this page to find out what it was NetQuake - Quake Wiki

                I also read somewhere else on the forum that you only use netquake here and not quakeworld, why is that?

                Anyway, I'll try it later on

                  Quake originally rolled out with the netcode being an absolute failure in terms of 'level playing field'.

                  I've read somewhere that Carmack and other employees of Id software had fast ISDN lines and did most if not all of their testing in that isolated broadband enviroment, which worked fine until you tried playing it across narrowband dialup. OOF

                  Quakeworld was intended to provided a near perfect level playing field,whether you pinged 20 or 200, and it created a huuuge rift in Quake1 multiplayer for a long time.

                  Many of us didn't get on board with Quakeworld and hated it for (insert reasons), and just stayed with the stock Quake multiplayer. For a long time, when someone said I play Quake1, you couldn't just be like Sweet lets go play, chances are they either played QW or NQ, not both. QW has distaste for NQ or their own reasons too,im sure.

                  It's 2013, I love leading my aim at an enemy. A Quaterback on a football team will not throw the ball to where his wide reciever is CURRENTLY AT. That's the most flawed fuck up of Quakeworld in my opinion. Shooting where an enemy is CURRENTLY located doesn't mean u hit them just becuase they was where you was aiming at when you pulled the trigger.Maybe im wrong but the LG and RL , GL, all 3 of those weapons was ruined in QW based on that fact.

                  Maybe I've got all this entirely wrong too,I'm just the player. I didn't create nor rip out the guts of QW or NQ, I just played and observed.

                      you should definitely give both 'something wicked this way comes' and the 'unforgiven' map sets

                      they both use the drake mod which adds a bunch of weapons and lots of great new enemies to the game, and really expands on quake

                      both map-sets are by tronyn, which is a brilliant mapper
                      the maps require either the RMQ engine or the latest 2013 darkplaces builds though, cuz they are so huge and detailed a new map-format called BSP2 had to be made for them and so far only those two engines support the map-format. but they are really amazing maps and well worth getting those specific engines for
