  • Any suggestions for darkplaces mods that don't have high RAM requirements?

Simple request here: I'm trying to test out some mods on QI4A (the Quake port for Android that uses the darkplaces engine). The problem is that I only have 1GB RAM to play with and the mods I've looked into already won't fully load. I'm especially looking for some enhanced graphics mods if possible. I guess I can't use too enhanced of graphics or else it won't even play.

well, DP is the eye-candy engine...
so any mods that are DP-specific mostly add eye-candy.

but you can run any quake mod just fine in DP, its not like you can only use DP-specific mods with it
    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?

everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

OK. Well I'm just playing around with this. I think this is the first time I've messed around with quake in like 10 years anyway. I'm really just looking for updated or alternative graphics/textures mods/packs/whatever they're called.

Replacement textures would go into video RAM, if that is separate on your device.

Space can be saved by using DDS format (DXT compression) for textures. I highly doubt that 99.9% of Quake mods would not fit into 1 GB of RAM after that. I mean I only have 1 GB on my PC and it can run stuff like Doom 3 absolutely fine.

Yeah, but this on an Android device (the Ouya to be exact). I have actually been able to (once I figured it out) get a medium level version of the Epsilon enhanced graphics pack to run on it. It doesn't appear to be able to load the high level version. Regardless, the Medium level Epsilon build looks better than most games currently on the Ouya. I'm looking for more ways to have fun playing Quake again on my new favorite mini console.

most "mods" (the progs.dat), take at most 640k

but even after all the game media, take less than 64megs. (IN THE SHADOWS) for example.

if u use one of my mods in a for sell venue, i want a percent of your shit.

this isnt rude, its the truth.

edit: oh i thought u were coding the android port and wanted to make a package. Nevermind

Nope, not modding myself and definitely not selling. This is n0n3m4's hard work ( http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-tal...roid-free.html ), and very good work at that. I've been able to work with n0n3m4 to develop a way to play Quake fully using just the Ouya's controller, completely independent of needing a keyboard (and it should also work with PS3 controller just as well). I'm just trying to find some more interesting things I can do with this and share with people, especially the Ouya community. I can understand the kb/mouse purist POV, but I like to try and pull off as much as I can on the Ouya with stock hardware. The only thing that's not stock is the external hard drive where I put the game files.

I have been able to pull off medium level Epsilon enhanced graphics running smoothly on the Ouya. I figured the reason why I can't pull off high level graphics is because of the 1GB RAM limitations of the Ouya. But still, even medium level looks impressive on the Ouya. And I'm planning on making some more videos of the Ouya running Quake with these graphics enhancements now. I just wanted to show off some other interesting Quake mods running on the Ouya as well.

Yea, i understand. Im old school i CAN NOT play using a controller of any merit.

imho thumb driven controllers are the weakest means to play anything more than your cell phone. but hey, if they dumb-down controls it opens up 20 years of future expansion, so whatever.

you might be too young to remember the trackballs and paddles. I blame Nintendo for making those stupid box button (+) controllers that started all this.

Did i mention i hate pad controllers?

Hey man, I grew up with an Atari 2600 in my house.

I'm actually already 30. I was getting into Doom, Duke3D and Quake when I was in middle school. I'm all for playing them on the PC and using kb/mouse but I have no quarrel with playing FPSes with controllers either; I'm pretty comfortable with both if I play them enough. This is just for me to help out the nostalgic Ouya gaming community that I'm a part of.

Although QI4A is designed for touchscreen devices, the Ouya is actually a set-top Android gaming console that connects to an HDTV and has its own controller. QI4A is developed by n0n3m4. Although I communicated with n0n3m4 to help make his ports more game controller-friendly. Through working together and communicating about how to make the controllers most compatible with the app, he was able to build a version of QI4A that didn't require any keyboard input in order to load, run and start a single player game; completely controller independent.

I was only able to run medium level graphics of the Epsilon build. Here's how it looks on my Ouya now.
