  • Another One Of Those Im Back In It Threads.. + Some Questions

what's up everyone!! great to be back in the game, i can't tell you how excited i am about getting back into quake - i was a big time player back in the day (not that i was that great, i was just always playing the game). Clan matches, leagues etc. the works. good times.

but anyway, im back and ready to rock and roll.

I got Quake geared up and going XP (it works... got that out of the way). I'm using ProQuake and I guess I also have WinQuake as well... both seem to go just fine.

Anyway my first question is how do I play online?! I tried connecting to some servers (from the quake server list - that were active and had people playing at the time) but to no avail. Is there something I'm missing - is there a different way to connect through ProQuake etc? Obviously before I'd run the Q95 file, but with XP that doesn't seem to be an option.

What's more, I'm connecting through the internet through a LAN, not the fastest connection but beats the dial-up I was playing with back in the day. Anyway, I would just try and connect, and it would keep saying.. trying, stil trying etc. What's more is that when I tried to connect a dns (like quake.shmack.net or whatever) it didn't even go to 'trying'. Like it said not found or whatever.

BTW did I mention I'm doing all of this from Sub-Saharan Africa? Word. But I got internet access and a laptop so I want to make this happen

Also, what's the more popular servers now? Is there a particular time when everyones on more? Obviously Quake 1 has lost alot of its clientelle from back in the day, but its great to see the devoted are still here.

    rock on.

Yeah, Quake is the most kick ass game of all time. Glad to see another player rediscover it.

Are you using ProQuake 3.50? Make sure you are, I figure you are.

It's in our files section. You type like "CONNECT QUAKE.SHMACK.NET" in the console to connect.

You must use ProQuake, QRack, JoeQuake or DarkPlaces for internet play.

Also check the stickied thread in the Help Forum and the section in Guides.

It is almost certainly a firewall issue or using the wrong internet connect.

You aren't using satellite internet are you? If so, I assure you that won't work (1500 ping = unplayable).

Check out the Guide on this topic and if that doesn't help let us know.

Wow, that's not where more visitors are from, hehe.

Most of the more popular servers are listed in the servers block. We usually play in evenings USA time. We will have a "all servers" page up soon (I saw the prototype today) that also lists the European and Brazilian servers.

      hey Thanks for the reply!

      You're right - I am using ProQuake 3.50.

No, it's not satellite internet - I'm in a city and using a connection routed through a telecommunications company, and its reasonably fast. It's all via a LAN setup at a school (the main server is also connected directly once its on - sorry I have a limited knowledge of server terminology etc. Although I am connecting via a proxy server on the network (if that makes sense.)

I have a feeling it has something to do with the firewall.

From the link you posted - The problem when I try to connect to the dns (like shmack.net) = 'QUAKE DENIED INTERNET ACCESS Problem.' However, when its a regular IP address I try to conenct with, it goes does the whole "Trying" thing.

I can access webpages, no problem.

I will give some of the other things mentioned in the link a shot and see how it goes.

Thanks for the help. Look forward to playing with you guys at some point.

also, do you have a recommendation for a good bot?

I don't have net access 24/7 here, so it would be nice to play at least a simulated multi-player mode while I don't.

I downloaded the old school 'reaperbot' but can't figure out how to work that since you needed to load it via the ms-dos prompt (quake -game etc).

        thanks

Until then, you can battle the bots!

[edit = you posted what I was thinking, the link in this post. I will have something even better available here tomorrow!]

It sounds like you are getting your internet connection through the school and your school is blocking Quake, just like our school gayed our internet with a blocking program so we couldant play online games from freearcade or whatever.

You can just get through those sites with a proxy. Type in google proxies and you'll find some stuff. schoolboredom.com has those. I use them all the time to play games and stuff. Luckily, it doesn't block quakeone.com so I can play the arcade.
