This is one of those more sentimental threads, but lately I've really been struck by the way Quake has changed so dramatically in such a short period of time.
I thought Bank's commentary in Quake Radio #10 was outstanding on the value of diversity and I think that anyone who hasn't listened to that definitely should.
Back in January, it seemed like I pretty knew everyone that was on a forum or playing on a server anyone. And anymore I don't know half the players I run into, I don't even know half the players registered here.
With all of these new mods, new servers -- and there is going to be so much more of that in the future, it feels to me like Quake exited an era of the Dark Ages and has entered into a new era.
And I'm not giving credit to that to this site because it is not so.
Sole, Yellow and I plus all of the numerous other members of the informal development team like Bam, Zop, Mindz, Hydro, Rook --- and I'm not even sure who all to include because we also got a lot of support from Jackhole, HDZ, Clan Rum, Slot Zero, Megazoid, Net-Tyme, Diazoild and well -- a ton of others while this site was in development for a year -- anyway we did put a lot of work into it -- but a web site is just HTML.
But the thing is, it has been the involvement of so many members of the community and it's not just been here either. Spirit has really made Quaddicted a valuable resource and they have been putting a lot of effort into things at Inside3D. This isn't just taking place here.
The thing that I feel has been the greatest is the last 3 or 4 months is realizing all of the new things and partipication everywhere and how that just was simply not possible even a few months ago.
Just from my perspective, I've met Bank, scar3crow, Sajt, Lardarse and get amazed when playing QTDM3 thinking that distrans made that map and it didn't even exist 3 months ago. I've got to know numerous European players and have read some outstanding stuff by JohnXMas and all the other single player enthusiasts who have valuable and insightful things to offer. And beyond this site, it is really cool to have tough technical questions and get answers from ppl like FrikaC, Metlslime, Necros, LordHavoc and aguirRe.
I better stop now because there are simply far too many new people, but a lot of times lately I'm just in awe of how radically things have changed in so little time and the enthusiasm for Quake and how much everyone cares about this game makes me feel the better for being part of the Quake community.
/alright Canadian*Sniper is going to make fun of me now
