  • On Diversity and Meeting New Friends

This is one of those more sentimental threads, but lately I've really been struck by the way Quake has changed so dramatically in such a short period of time.

I thought Bank's commentary in Quake Radio #10 was outstanding on the value of diversity and I think that anyone who hasn't listened to that definitely should.

Back in January, it seemed like I pretty knew everyone that was on a forum or playing on a server anyone. And anymore I don't know half the players I run into, I don't even know half the players registered here.

With all of these new mods, new servers -- and there is going to be so much more of that in the future, it feels to me like Quake exited an era of the Dark Ages and has entered into a new era.

And I'm not giving credit to that to this site because it is not so.

Sole, Yellow and I plus all of the numerous other members of the informal development team like Bam, Zop, Mindz, Hydro, Rook --- and I'm not even sure who all to include because we also got a lot of support from Jackhole, HDZ, Clan Rum, Slot Zero, Megazoid, Net-Tyme, Diazoild and well -- a ton of others while this site was in development for a year -- anyway we did put a lot of work into it -- but a web site is just HTML.

But the thing is, it has been the involvement of so many members of the community and it's not just been here either. Spirit has really made Quaddicted a valuable resource and they have been putting a lot of effort into things at Inside3D. This isn't just taking place here.

The thing that I feel has been the greatest is the last 3 or 4 months is realizing all of the new things and partipication everywhere and how that just was simply not possible even a few months ago.

Just from my perspective, I've met Bank, scar3crow, Sajt, Lardarse and get amazed when playing QTDM3 thinking that distrans made that map and it didn't even exist 3 months ago. I've got to know numerous European players and have read some outstanding stuff by JohnXMas and all the other single player enthusiasts who have valuable and insightful things to offer. And beyond this site, it is really cool to have tough technical questions and get answers from ppl like FrikaC, Metlslime, Necros, LordHavoc and aguirRe.

I better stop now because there are simply far too many new people, but a lot of times lately I'm just in awe of how radically things have changed in so little time and the enthusiasm for Quake and how much everyone cares about this game makes me feel the better for being part of the Quake community.

    Pfft, I aint dunn sheeit.

Whats weird to me is looking at FrikaC or some of the other I3D regulars and realizing Ive known them for more than 1/3rd of my life.

Quake is much more a family thing for me.

But aside from yell at golden_boy, I really havent done much.

I appreciate the sentiment, but it has a smaller impact on me I guess just because I recall the rich tapestry we had back in 96 and 97 with things like the New Vore Times, and when shacknews was the shugashack, a news site boasting the latest deathmatch demos.

Quake as a community has morphed once more, as it has subtlely done over time. But the game still rests firmly in its runic soil and what I love on this internet. It has shown me the good that can come out of such a thing.

hmm? no I completely agree. Just remember that you only listed 30% of the contributers.

but if you really want me too...

If you were Canadian, this would have never happened PLUS you'd get a +1 in happy! (b)

edit: just noticing my rank name now. Is this a custom rank name? I don't want it. If it's part of the ranking system then whatever.

          you got pwned

Any way this site IS the best quake site there is in terms of community IMO. everyone here seems to be really easy going and even the admins seem to have fun! usually admins are these dudes that are like "I work and I go to bed and every once in a while I look at the site". Not here! we got some great admins! baker and yellow number 5 are pretty cool.. wait.. it IS yellow number 5 right?

I think that the diversity in quake is kinda caused by the open source spirit though. If you take a look at any other big open source project (I will consider quake an open source project), the community is very diverse. People will always want more and every once in a while someone will come and say "you want more? Well here's more of what you want!" And then more people come in to check it out. when you have 5 nice people (devs) to make their own improvements, even more people check stuff out. and then some of those people who think they can improve on existing improvements can improve stuff and so on and so on.

I can see the humour but I'm not a fan of admin abuse.

Actually, I was the one who made his title "Sole Ownz You!" as he was worried about whether or not there were more rankings.

Back in March when the site opened, I don't think anyone had contemplated someone having 1000+ posts in anything less than 6 months so the rankings system was topped out.

Anyway, I gave him a ranking of his own choice since he's well beyond the threshold of the system in place and I didn't want to figure out more rankings for superhigh numbers of posts.

The best site for players, maybe.

Without open source, obviously Quake would be just some CD most people have that they used to play 10 years ago.

The flexibility of improving open source and, therefore, Quake is what makes this an exciting game to play. You can mold the engine, mold the QuakeC and of course build maps and tie things together. I won't deny that this is a major backbone of all of the different parts of the Quake community.

I think the social atmosphere of Quake came together for a number of reasons including the resolve to stop the erosion of the game. I remember in the past people saying Quake was dead and it really irritated me, and in fact, part of the initial motivation a year ago for me personally and my part in this was someone saying Quake will be dead by the holiday season and my part in this was part of my "f*** you" to that guy, at least initially.

That was a long time ago now it seems and but since then the thoughts of pushing the limits and thinking of approaches and solutions soon eclipsed those. I think many others share in the desire to preserve this game -- not as a museum piece -- but as THE game to play and Quake has strong assets in both the multiplayer and single player departments -- and for me, this makes me feel like I am quite un-alone (is that word? does it matter? hehe)

I haven't really tried to change anything -- I just keep on quaking and try to be the best there is. Which I believe that I am close to suceeding. Tical is now my only big obstacle to overcome.

Before I knew about singed.net , I always did used to think quake was going to die, because all of the old school DM servers died out, and they were being replaced with Runequake. But now that I know there is a big giant community of quakers, I get the feeling that 10 years from now, I'll still be playing quake with all of the other players.

I think my title should be "I own All that don't have a ping less than 30 from me"

Monster, we should play at dm.quakeone.com, I was pinging 40 there. I'm sure our game would be even.

I have played this game since I was 16,and I'll still be playing it when I'm 26,and 36,and 46,etc etc.

ps : Monster , I can name 5 players right now that slap you around like I did the other day, even I cant beat them (except maybe on a good day) and NONE of those 3 will be tical. Yes jake is good, but there are other players out there just as good as him if not better at times, namely Phocus,Vibe,Rampage,Krix and Basy.I believe 3 of the mentioned players will be in the CA tourney as well. I'm looking forward to that btw, it's been awhile since being in a tourney, and my game has improved a lot since then.

The CA tourney will be a excellent opportunity to shed some light on Quake,I am going to contact the Emporer about possibly giving it a mention
