... if i were to...hypothetically get back to playing, what should i download to play?
i saw papasmurf's post about a re-design... that'd be pretty awesome!
Hi Raebo
For eye candy the Darkplaces engine with SMC + HD textures is pretty hard to beat these days. For sheer speed and rock solid dependability Proquake still performs extremely well... unless you want to record demos . For a halfway house between the 2, Qrack or DirectQ are both excellent.
Depending on your server preference and assuming you are not an eternal DM3er you might also want to avail yourself with a series of custom map packs. which should be available in the Q1 multiplayer file repo (see the link in my sig)
Hope this helps
Monty
P.S. @the bringer of RuneQuake death that is Sole - while we are on the subject of SMC given the massive contribution Seven has made with it over the years, would it be more appropriate to put it in a dedicated section like Qrack where Seven can upload his work and people can just "grab and play" ? Just thinking out loud and I know it isn't an engine but somehow it doesn't seem appropriate to constrain it in a thread format anymore

RuneQuake 1v1 tournament! The last one I took part in was back when DFG held it, and he used the song Sandstorm by Da Rude for the websites theme song. It was pretty epic, would love to take part in another!
hmmm.. You're the second person to mention that idea, the other (unsurprisingly ) being Dee Killer. I suppose we could try and and organise something if Pol is up for it. What did you have in mind? a sort of league thing where we have a number of matches and the winner goes through to the next round?

Well, I just REALLY REALLY enjoyed 1v1 RQ tournament
i'll try darkplaces. what are the SMC's that i have to download, and where do i put them?
just loaded up qrack. everything is jittery and i have to figure out all the settings... looks like it'll have to wait until next week. surfing this weekend up in SF.
SMC is an excellent add-on for Darkplaces produced by a very helpful coder from Germany (who is a contributing member here at Quakeone.com) called Seven. It's fair to say that most of the benefits are observed in single player mode, but it is definitely worth trying out as it has so many well thought out features and new material that it brings a new fresh look and feel to the game whilst at the same time keeping it true to it's roots.
You should be able to glean all you need for downloading and installing from the link I provided but personally, to keep things organised, I created a folder called smc then placed all the content inside it and fire it it up with -game smc in my command line.
Qrack is usually smooth but I'm sure someone here will be able to help you if get stuck.

You should not download and put all version from the smc into 1 folder.
That will lead to issues, as you will play regular Quake with the "Dissolution of eternity" (mission pack 2) game code.
That is why there are 3 different versions of the smc: A) For regular Quake (You can recognize it on the word "Quake" in the download file name) B) For mission pack 1 aka "Scourge of Armagon" by Hipnotic Software. (You can recognize it on the word "Hipnotic" in the download file name) C) For mission pack 2 aka "Dissolution of eternity" by Rogue Entertainment. (You can recognize it on the word "Rogue" in the download file name)
B) should be put into your mission pack 1 mod folder (usually named "hipnotic")
C) should be put into your mission pack 2 mod folder (usually named "rogue")
While A) can be put into the "smc" subfolder, just as you mentioned.
Thanks for the clarification Seven
Fortunately I only ever normally play using option A so it sounds like I may have just been lucky.
Glad to see you back sir, you've certainly been missed
Kind regards
Monty

i tried using the hipnotic, but it puts me out of the map for the Intro level, and i can't move. also, there are these weird diamond looking things when I play, what are those things?
