  • Loyalty to idsoftware

What I really like about idsoftware is the fact that id has released many great games without going into the mainstream area. Even today, idsoftware continues to apply this strategy. From my experience, people who belong to the mainstream area are corrupt and dishonest. Not only has this occurred in video-gaming, this has also taken place in the world of acting, music, you name it (virtually any form of entertainment). Mainstream people only care about money. Their fans dictate what they should wear, what they're supposed to say, how they should behave, who they're supposed to hang out with, who they should hate, etc. In short, if you belong to the pop culture, you cannot be yourself. No kidding, idsoftware has had some hard times. For example, I thought that Doom 3 and Quake 4 focused on story mode too much, as opposed to game-play. Doom 3 and Quake 4 were not horrible, but I thought that they were too easy. But the good thing about idsoftware was the fact that id avoided the 'mainstream virus'. idsoftware is different from Bungie and 343 Industries. (For those that don't know, Bungie and 343 Industries made the Halo games.) I think that Halo is the epitome of mainstream/pop culture. I don't know how Halo managed to sell so many copies; I think it's a marketing strategy. But if a person thinks that Halo is a great game, I would advise this person to play Half-life. Back to my main point; the mainstream culture is evil. Even when idsoftware was extremely successful, id managed to keep a humble image. Without question, id was very successful with the releases of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. But idsoftware never showed off; id never jumped onto the mainstream bandwagon. I look at people such as John Carmack and John Romero and those people are humble. Those people are actually setting a good example for society. I do not want to sound so negative. I don't think that mainstream culture is 100% wrong. Mainstream culture can enhance the social skills of people. But, in conclusion, I congratulate idsoftware for being honest with themselves and for avoiding the mainstream stranglehold. Originality does matter and idsoftware is the master of originality.

Well... There is truth in what you say, but now that neither of John Carmack or John Romero are still working for iq and the company has been bought by Bethesda I am afraid the company fallen in the "mainstream" effect you mention.

It is indeed a shame. About the humbleness, now I feel is true.
But in the case of Romero I have the feeling it is the effect of an harsh lesson, his pride made him lose the job at iq at the time of Quake. He worked hard on Dai Katana and it become a failure so much his company went bankrupt. He even lost his hair!
    He recovered well however.
Contradiction is truth. Fear is freedom. Rights are privileges. Job is a commodity. Ignorance is strength.

The ID team that made Quake had good solid fundamentals of what can be entertaining. They also worked well together, something they use to call teamwork.

While this is true, I have to admit that I would be willing to try "Skyrim - Deathmatch Classic"
I've seen things you people would probably believe. Machariels on fire off of Serpentis Prime. I watched tachyon beams glitter in the dark near the Tannolen gate. All of those moments will be lost in time... Like Drakes in the outer ring... Time to fly

So instead of dying from falling off of cliffs, you die from strafejumping off of them? Just try not to get caught on the map geometry during your fetch quest!
          Quake is for nerds.
