  • Maps with hordes?

I love maps with lots of enemies, I have a soft spot for running and shooting in large areas shooting dozen of adversaries...

My favorite map is the first one of Unforgiven. (The second is only nice, the third is ok).

Did you try and suggest any map in this style?

The Masque of Red Death is another map from tronyn with horde combat
    https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/masque_final.html

bastion of the underworld & the marcher fortress both also have horde combat:

    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
    > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

The Masque of Red Death was quite good... really, why there are no games with lots of levels like that?

I was somewhat shocked when I understood I was the bad guy at the end. When I read the messages I was like: "What? Again of this annoying maps where you kill everyone, but the bad guy wins anyway? ... no, wait... I AM the bad guy... what a weird feeling... maybe there is a readme?" I checked the readme and it was indeed the case. Refreshing in a way.

It is on a similar level than Unforgiven(1), in The Masque of Red Death I felt more atmosphere, but on the other hand Unforgiven(1) has Dragons that are always a plus. The world need more dragons and cyberdaemons... or cyberdaemons riding dragons...

        Continuing the list, thanks gentlemen.

I like lots of enemies as long as I have lots of ammo! I hate being swarmed and I have nothing but my axe left.

It happened to me in The Masque of Red Death while playing Nightmare... so I replayed in normal and it become a breeze, still lots of fun! Strongly encouraged. I think you have to use monster infighting quite a bit to survive Nightmare.

I played kinn bastion now and, horde-wise, it plays much more like a normal map. There is a final horde fight, but the rest is fairly normal. Yet, I found it quite fun.

I've found that a lot of more recent custom Quake maps put health and ammo at a premium. I think that is quite punishing on the player. The original maps have a lot of resources, even multiple quads and pents in some cases.

In some episode 4 maps, it's like the player is spawning quads and pents when you watch a speedrun, they'll always have some sort of powerup.

In general there is more stuff to pick up in the original maps.

I am actually divided on this aspect, on one side it is annoying that you cannot win on a first game since you have to know where save ammo (sacrificing health) skipping monsters or exploiting monster in-fight or you'll find yourself with just an axe against an horde of Shamblers...

On the other hand it does make the map more re-playable.

For example, as I mentioned on the first post Unforgiven(1) is one of my favorite maps. But I finished it in Nightmare on the first try, I played it quite few times afterward and that's it...

I'd say that when you can't get replayability after putting enough ammo and health in, something's wrong with the map.

Maybe horde gameplay isn't otherwise interesting enough.

                    Blasphemy!

I do not think re-playability and hordes are not really correlated concepts. I still play some id maps that have no hordes (heck, they are fairly small actually)...

                      Try Dry Sorrow
you will be dead before you know you were alive in that map. you gotta keep moving fast

also with the SMC you can tweak it to play maps with hordes just use all the helper monsters and X3 monster settings.

Usually when I think to hordes I think to large areas and lots of monsters... In this case the latter is definitely true. I played it the begin is really harsh, but... where is the silver rune key?

I killed most of the enemies (143 in medium map!), but I cannot find that key...

EDIT: On Easy the key is in front of the gold closed door, but in Nightmare it is not there... Where is it ?
