  • Wanna dive into Quake singleplayer once again, what engine/mods to use?

Hey guys. I'm a big fan of Quake and I was playing it a lot like 10 years ago and even did some modding back then. Now I felt nostalgic and I'd like to complete Quake singleplayer campaign again.

I have the original game (of course), but I'm wondering what mods and engine should I use. My needs are quite simple: I do NOT want fancy hires textures and I'd like to keep the original feel as much as possible, but I bet there are some mods that fix bugs here and there, maybe remastered sounds, adding some little things like shell casing, fixing monster AI, level issues, etc. Also, about engines, is Darkplaces still the go-to engine?

To be more clear, those who familiar with classic Doom series know that there are two awesome mods that brings the game to the new, modern level, but still maintaining exactly the same feel as original game: Brutal Doom and DoomNE. Maybe there's something like that for Quake?

    I would start off downloading:

Quakespasm. As a more faithful to the original Quake, but modern engine.

    And as you mentioned:

DarkPlaces. Which has all the bells and whistles.

If you have done some modding before you know to just pop your id1 directory into their install directories and off you go!

I have just been playing through some excellent community made maps and I would recommend:

    CZG's Honey.

    Metislime & CZG's Rubicon2

Plus any of Socks maps, though I personally tend to get a bit lost in his lovely creations.

For keeping the original feel, Quakespasm is the go to engine. As for mods that make it a bit more challenging, there are Quoth and Drake. A lot of maps have been made for Quoth, just go to the Quaddicted website and browse its archive and search for "Quoth." Drake is the mod used for most of Tronyn's maps, a good one to check out is Unforgiven or Something Wicked This Way Comes.

And then there is also the Remake Quake project, which is not currently in development anymore, but changed the gameplay quite a lot. A few pretty good maps came out of it.
