  • Back for my Vitamin Q

    Hey everyone.

I know I'm not a regular here, but I do lurk these boards every once in a while to see what's new and exciting etc.

I try to do a playthrough of Quake every year or so, to remind myself: "Oh yeah, this is what shooters should feel like." Browsing some of the new eyecandy for Darkplaces, my fave engine, I was really impressed. So, thank you to everyone who has the time and skill to do all these amazing models/textures/shaders, etc. You're keeping my childhood alive!

I've added a bunch of those mods to my collection of DP mods. I've always been blown away with how insanely good the Quake engine can be made to look compared to its vanilla form. My mod collection aims to do just that, to my personal tastes.

I was debating posting what I've gathered, in case anyone else likes what they see, and are as lazy as I am and prefer a nice simple .rar file with instructions. In addition, I had a simple question, so I'm not sure if this should be in general, or Quake help. Apologies if the mods felt it needed to be elsewhere.

Anyway, here's the thing I did:

Would anyone be interested in me throwing this up on a dropbox or something? Am I even allowed to do so because its not my own work?

And my question is: is there any way to improve the FPS with those particle flame torches? It doesn't make it unplayable, but it does make feel less awesome. I've been fiddling with it for a few days to no avail. I've got a decent rig, though by no means top of the line, so I'm unsure if it's that or not. i5 760 and a GTX680.

I'd like to keep them if I could! And yes, I'm fairly certain they're the problem. The only other thing I can think of it being is the fancy teleport effect I have.

    Anyway too

It would be awesome if you could put this on dropbox or something, but you would have to be careful, because it isn't your own work, like you said.

As for your frame rate problem, as far as I know, it would be the video card, but that depends if its a 1Gb 680 ot a 2Gb.

    Anyway, happy quaking!

Yeah, I'm not clear on that. I mean I'm not making any money obviously, and all the pk3s and such are credited in the .rar I'd upload... so I THINK it's okay.

the 680 is a 4gb actually. I plan to upgrade soon though so this might be a moot point.

EDIT: Actually, after getting the sprite flames to work, there seems to be no difference in performance. I tried disabling the teleport effect too, and still chugging. So I'll keep fiddling to find the culprit. I have a feeling its something in the SMC that I haven't turned off or noticed.

EDIT EDIT: It was the SMC. I'll tweak it so it runs better before I post anything on dropbox.

Not sure exactly what you did, did you substitute models in the directories or did you do it in Quake C?

If you have an FPS issue try disabling v sync in the video options menu. If its a custom mod someone made, then it could be just that they purposefully blew up the effects to be awesome maybe by using effectinfo.txt file, then if thats the case , its just some editing to that file to tweak donw some of the values to make it less awesome, but less fps demanding.

          RE: Uploading

So, technically any mod made for quake is supposed to open source, which means people are free to edit and change it however they want, and I think that includes distributing it, so long as credit is given to the original author

All I've done is thrown a bunch of pk3s together, modified some config files, and deleted some effects/files I didn't like. No coding or hard modification.

Vsync was already off. I fiddled with the smc config a bunch and still can't get it to go smoothly. Interestingly enough, the FPS starts out fine, >60, but slowly lowers to 10 over the course of 5 seconds or so.

            I'll keep toying with it.
