It's been debated, and I see 3 major options.
Ventrilo - I used this while playing an extensive DC ctf game. While DesertCombat is a mod for Battlefield1942, a relatively old game, it still draws most of my CPU power on high graphics. Ventrilo however let me esilu communicate with friends on the DC server while playing, simultaniously. We were able to locate snipers, bailers (people who drop from planes in order to cap flag), and tank campers efficiantly. The end score was 7-0, 7 being coalition team, which was useing ventrilo. The opposition team had a slight advantage as one of them had ventrilo as well, but there are multiple channels for coalition anb oppoosition. I see no reason why this would not be possible with Quake (e.g. red vs blue in tdm or ca or whatever). Definately a 10/10 experiance.
Skype - never used it, but I imagine it would be the same as Ventrilo or just remotely different
Trillian - From what I hear, nice IM program compatible with most other IM's.
