I noticed r_drawflame 0 gives me between 8 and 20 more fps in software joequake.
I measured in many places through episode 1 and 2. The start of e2m2 for example goes from 24 fps to 42 (timerefresh value.)
Timerefresh values are often much lower than what show_fps thinks, because the latter only knows your FOV. Timerefresh does a whole 360 degree turn.
I'd never have thought that those flames are such FPS hogs. You know how many of them are in typical id maps?
