  • Hook Haters

I was wondering how many people really like the grappling hook? My favorite server to play on is the practice mode shmack.net:26002. My buddy dleifriaf and I like to play with the grappling hook on but when people come into the server they are always requesting that it be turned off.

I ask a lot of players in the servers if they like it and most people have said they can't stand the hook. Why??? I'm up for playing either way but I'm just wondering why all the hatin?

    Because they are all newblets.

Really though, most people going to :26002 are usually looking for a DM styled game. Hook does not belong in pure DM. That's probably why you see lots of people requesting hook to be off.

Hook is a definate for CTF and really fits in with Runequake. Other than that, the hook is rarely utilized.

I love the hook, I think it's a very, VERY helpful thing.

I just absolutely hate people that use it as a weapon. It's a really cheap way to get a kill, and if I could change anything I'd want the hook to only do minor damage instead of a constant flow of damage.

And yes, anyone that kills me with hook will get my famous "HOOKER!!" bind!

Hook is for newblest that have no rocket jumping or bunny hopping skills. Damn newbies.

i think the hook ads a whole new dimension to the game and makes the game a lot more interesting... and really doesn't do THAT much damage... i love just hanging at a high point and sniping people w/ rockets though that strategy never seems enough to win

no hook for me. it takes away from the maps design and some of the runes.
For instance, tornado and gravity runes are great with no hook but less interesting with it.

hook is fun too sometimes, but if i had to choose one or the other, i would say off.

hook should just stay as a rune ability. the hook rune.

Eh, it's appropriate in certain situations but not all. Kinda becomes a gimick after a while.

I don't like having a hook in a lot of situations. Like Sole said, the hook fits in really well in Rune Quake and certain maps are very enhanced by having a hook -- DM6, many of the ID maps.

But the grappling hook is "all wrong" on a number of custom maps where it can ruin the design of the map.

I think the awkward (but too useless) Trinicom hook and the awkward xCTF hook go well with CTF. (hates the impulse 22 style hook)

A lot of the whiners that get chills down their spine at the thought of playing at, say, Shmack have fragile egos and have not mastered the hook and fear (rightly) getting owned. It never stopped any of the truly brutal players from Quake's recent past from slaughtering everyone (DFG, Pendragon, Quazy, Gohan, WeirdQ).

I prefer no hook to having a having hook because I think it makes the game easier and more strategic.

Like many players, I have mastered the grappling hook and it is a truly difficult skill to perfect and increases the speed of the game and complexity of play drastically -- which is fun.

That being said, it takes away some of the fun perils of game play and Quake is -- to me -- often more fun being a battle of strategy with limited movement possibilities with a slower rate of play.

I think a well-balanced player should be able to compete both with the hook and without the hook and there are players both hopelessly unable to cope with the hook and players that are hopelessly feeble without it.

If I had to choose, like Lefty, I'd vote against the hook, heheh.

naw. It just got repetative and isn't my style of play. I played at Shmack to win for a while but really it got boring and I just fucked around with the runes. Trinicom > Shmack:26000. Numbers lie
