Yeah, scar3crow did a nice job of asking Romero for the map sources when he did the interview for the Quake Expo and it would be really great for the community to have access to those.

.map files allow you to fully modify a map just load up and u see the "blueprint"

for instance there are some original iD maps that have certain areas that suck for ctf, but this can be removed if one had the .map file for such map. Or I can see someone cleaning up the glitches for monster/bot movement pathways etc...

I don't see the need for id map sources, but whatever floats your boat.

Does anyone know if Romero has ever played RuneQuake?

He hasnt played many of the mods unfortunately.

The .map files would be another step in the direction of Quake being open to modders all the more which is a good thing, and its just kind of neat flying around in them in an editor.

Due to intellectual property bs, he had to send them to id for approval, this was a while ago, it was supposed to only take 2 weeks for them to "approve" (what they need to approve, I dont know). I will check up with him next week or so on the progress (I try to not hassle him, especially being as how he's going through a hassle for the community in getting these).

So who knows if id will be cool with it, Romero is cool with it, and he did 1/4th of the maps... only one of the mappers is still at id now anyways (Tim Willits). Curious because Kedhrin spoke with Hollenshead in person about Quake10Year (the project that would benefit greatly from the .map files) and Hollenshead thought it was quite cool and within legal boundaries as long as it requires registered Quake to play. I hope to see these come through simply for what it could do for Quake10Year.
