  • How to get the best experience quake 1?

    Hey there! N00b post....

Its great to see the Q1 community still alive, personally Quake was and still is one of my favourite FPS games, it had the most user friendly engine, and the best gameplay.

I haven't played quake in about 7 years now, and well with all the wicked graphics fix's that are around, im a bit lost!

which one to use? what would you guys recommend for getting the best experience out of quake and still being able to use my 3 old favourite mods; Slide, Painkeep & Killer Quake???

    Thanks in Advance!
    BRAD

I'd recomend Darkplaces. Mainly because of the many features it has and how it doesn't crash if you don't have a certain model/map.

JoeQuake and Qrack are also good clients. Each engine has their own little cool features to make them unique.

There are tons of Quake engines out there. I think we could answer your question better by what YOU want in an engine

ps - all three of those engines would be able to play your mods

The Qrack 1.55 EZ Installer includes 24-bit textures and new weapon models, etc. out of the "box", it is located in Downloads -> Clients. "1 install does it all".

The DarkPlaces EZ Installer (Downloads -> Textures) includes the real time lights and you can obtain the Quake Retexturing Project and the DarkPlaces format Plague's Pak (located in Downloads -> Textures).

You can separately obtain all of the above in zip format from the respective home pages of the engines/sites located on the left side of the site.

      Another option is JoeQuake:

The Qrack EZ installer has an incorrect version of Qrack and should not be used. If you want to use Qrack get it off the Qrack page at http://www.quakeone.com/qrack/. There is a setup guide there as well.

If you are considering improved graphics engines you're only two choices really are Qrack and Darkplaces. Joequake is good too but since Qrack is based on Joequake but with considerable features added, so you should just use Qrack if you're using it for multiplayer.

Darkplaces is the most advanced engine with features such as bumpmapping and real time lighting. Dp has been created more as a great fps engine based on Quake, rather than as an improved version of Quake still intended for playing classic quake mods and multiplayer games. It has it's own implimentation of quakec that is not always compatitble with standard mods, and many of its features are specific to it's own dpmod. Dp's author is very interested in community feedback and will probably add more multiplayer features in the future.

Qrack is based on JoeQuake, a great single player engine which adds many nice features such as custom textures, models, q3 style effects (qmb), avi capturing, etc. Qrack adds proquake's excellent multiplayer features to this such as teamscores, scoreboard pings, dosquake sound levels, iplog etc, as well as more graphics features such as decals, celshading, poly outlining, blooms (in newest beta), etc.

I use Qrack because it is made to be used for playing standard multiplayer quake games with additional features and grphics upgrades, which is what I use it for. I couldn't live without some of it's features such as pq_teamscores, custom mm2 sound, r_outline, cl_autodemo, etc.

The EZ Installer doesn't check for up to date versions? It's an easy feature, just google for it.

Yeah but that would add unnecessary complication. The EZ Installers are meant to be lite, reliable and self-sufficient to let the less computer literate among us easily have access to nice things.

If youre just looking for straightup playing some old mods in singleplayer for the fun of it, Darkplaces or FitzQuake should suit you fine. If youre looking for multiplayer, Darkplaces is what I use pretty much exclusively (unless it is specified I use something else in the files readme).

If you liked those old mods, you might like FrikaC's mods, like Snowed, Prydon's Gate and such.

                  cheers for the help guys!

I'm now using Dark Places, with the additional "Retexture Project" textures added in, and F#@K me it looks great!

one question tho, with the retexture project, i cant get the re-tex skins to work, it mentions in the readme that for Dark Places you need to:

extract the files to quake\id1\textures\progs &&& you must rename the files to model.mdl_0.tga (so for example, armor_0.tga would need to be renamed to armor.mdl_0.tga ... the .mdl must be)

NOW, ive put them into the quake\id1\textures\progs dir, but i cant work out the renaming, as the file name structure is weird, and isnt uniformed!

can some one possibly post what each file should be renamed to? that is of course if anyone else has gotten it working!

I spent a few minutes renaming Gunter's replacement monster skins (because they were readily available) into the DarkPlaces naming convention.

Untested, but should work. They don't use some of the fancy DarkPlaces things like bump maps/gloss maps so there may be monster skins that look better in DarkPlaces somewhere, but here goes:

                    Download: http://www.quake-1.com/files/texture...id1-folder.pk3

This is a .pk3 file, a format DarkPlaces can read. Place in c:\quake\id1 and start DarkPlaces and it should load.
