I've seen a lot of projects for creating crisper higher resolution versions of the preexisting textures in Quake, but has anyone ever attempted creating realistic textures that were created using photographs? I think this would be pretty cool, also, what is the maximum resolution for a texture in Quake? I assume it differs from engine to engine?

you right,it differs from engine to engine probably. The best way would be checking each website for each engine

(someone else can give you the DP website,I dont know it by heart

It rather differs on your videocard I think. Using photos for textures is hard, especially for unrealistic textures like in Quake.

Photo-realistic textures on Quake maps makes them look really boxy.
3 very nice looking texture sets are:

http://www.quakeone.com/index.php?in...le&file_id=131
http://www.quakeone.com/index.php?in...le&file_id=133
Those textures are only for DM3/DM6/DM2 and make the maps look radically different. Unzip the textures into c:\quake\id1\textures\dm2 or c:\quake\id1\textures\dm3 ... you get the idea.
Engines: Qrack, DarkPlaces, JoeQuake
Mindz: The DarkPlaces home page link is

There's also Starbuck's textures which I really like:

This texture set is mainly for e1m1 e2m1 e3m1 e4m1 dm3 aerowalk e1m1rmx. Hopefully Starbuck will make some more, I keep motivating him
I can always help you in setting these textures up for whatever engine you'll use.
