It is common knowledge that the strong Rune Quake community carried the USA multiplayer Quake community and kept up the art of QuakeC and maintaining servers/engine development, etc. And we all know those that participated in that.
BEFORE the Rune Quake community, there was a very important person who did a lot for the community.
That person was Roderick J. Shertler http://www.argon.org/quake/
Roderick Shertler ran the Marlinspike server, also known as Schnoggo. Back in the day, a lot of higher skilled players tended to play there (WeirdQ, Koopa, Slot Zero, Oyo, Ryu, Wulf, Smooth) and hang around.
When I first played Quake, I really *hated* playing on that server with dialup because it was Lithium Hook, and if you weren't really good -- it sucked! (Lithium Hook is where you have to find a grappling hook and strong players always had them, meaning that new spawns were very easy to catch up to and kill. Only very strong players tended to have a grappling hook for very long.)
But the far more important is that Roderick took the original Artifact Quake and started debugging it and adding a LOT of features into it and heavily documenting the code.
Roderick added countless features, aliases, runes and bug fixes to the mod.
But most likely the most important thing of all:
Artifact Quake wasn't GPL (GPL = Open Source) prior Roderick's Artifact-RJS and, I'm guessing, at some point Roderick obtained Singe's permission take over the mod.
Had Artifact-RJS not been GPL'd, most of the mods we have and use probably wouldn't exist -- at least not in their present form. Artifact-RJS spawned countless derivatives (ask Zop, hehe) and the code was frequently a reference for adding features into other mods, being the highest quality/most refined/most debugged mod and having the advantage of being open source.
Artifact-RJS later was handed off to Slot Zero by Roderick and became Rune Quake, and Slot Zero added even more features/mods and further debugged the mod.
