Nothing really. Just a conversation piece. Plus, when Quake celebrates it's 20 year anniversary we can all come back to this thread and laugh at what we used.

It was awesome when I bought a used Voodoo. Never had such a feeling later of "Oh my god, this looks incredible" again.

I started playing quake on a
386 CPU with no floating point processor, no sound, 28.8k Ext modem(The shizznit at the time) uhm 4mb ram and a keyboard and a 2 button mouse... and a 13 inch monitor..

                    Soon later I updated to a P133 12Mb RAM.. 40MB HD PIMPN !
I had a choice when i was baught Quake for my birthday, August 17th 1996.
I could have a soundcard, or I could have a modem for internet... I already had gotn Quake for my B-day from my dear old grandma, bless her soul. Needless to say I chose the modem and said "F*ck sound." so I started my Quaking experince deaf and didnt know what a shambler truely sounded like until about 4 months later

For those of you who don't know.. Running Quake without a CPU that supports a Floating Point Processor is like a newborn baby trying to push a fully loaded Semi @ 70mph It was bad...

Now I get 300+ FPS in Qrack @ a resolution of 1280x1024 in window mode and I have 2 soundsystems! 5.1 surround sound, and a 10 button mouse! with a 12Mbps HIGHSPEED cable modem!
                    This brings back memories..

My PSP (Playstation Portable) has more raw CPU power then my first computers combined... and its a hand held gaming device!

First PC I Played Quake on:

                          - Pentium I 75Mhz
                          - 8MB RAM
                          - 120MB HDD
                          - 28.8 Modem
                          - Voyetra Soundcard
                          - 4x CDROM
                          - 15" ADI Micrascan Monitor
                          - Keyboard player at the time

                          Now:

                          - AMD Athlon Dual Core 3800+
                          - 1GB DDRDRAM
                          - GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB
                          - 500GB 3x HDD RAID 0
                          - Audigy 2 Gamer + 5.1 Surround Sound
                          - 72x CDROM / DVD-R/RW +/-

I remember going to a electronics store in the northwest and buying a Voodoo I video card after I upgraded my first PC to a P133 w/ 2D Grafix card. I put that sucker in there and connected 2D-3D and was AMAZED at the difference of OpenGL grafix vs. none.

                            Spirit,

There once was a point where i didnt understand the point of upgrading and why I needed a faster PC until I was given the Pentiumm133.

The P133 rocked my world.. especially when I got a Monster3D 12MB video card
I didn't know PC games were supposed to play that fast in 3D or what a 3D card was for I thought the gaming consoles were supposed to be for games
