Hi. My name's Frenzy, and I'm an alcoholic.

    (Hi Frenzy!)

    Hi.

This thread is going to solely point out some things from my perspective involving quake overall.

I'll start off with the 2-2 Tournament Play since this seems to be the most recent rant and rave. Last night Bryant and I teamed in the 2-2, and we won. Well, a lot of people had a problem with the way we won - because I played more careful than most. Some of you will call this being a pussy, some of you will call this strategics. Doesn't really matter. When you play a game, you play to win. I have been on the Champion team 4 times now (which is the current record by the way for those of you who wanna step up and overtake that), and 2 times I have played rush-style, 2 times I have played strategic-style. This is 50-50 - showing I can win either way. Anyways, if you don't like the way another player plays his/her game, that's just something you'll have to deal with. Nobody can control another player, and just because he/she is not playing the way YOU want them to, means nothing. That's called being a sore loser. Deal with your competition by beating them "on the court", don't run to mIRC or the forums to complain about it.

Next, is just a quick run-over of the admin situation. I see nobody abusing admin that has it (except for a case last night that doesn't even involve one of the admin's anybody has even ever spoke of). The mute feature is a very very nice addon, and will save kicking and/or banning, still allowing the player to compete, just without his/her mouth. I spoke with Yellow-5 and I think he's going to ask R00k to add a vote-mute option that way the players can do the vote, and this will solve a whole lot of complaining about the "admin abuse" that doesn't exist in my mind. I hope that is done soon - if not you will have to deal with the so-called "admin abuse".

Anyways, quake is still alive these days, and quite a few of us spend a lot of our time doing things for the community because we want to. We would very much appreciate it if the insults/etc would come to a cease. We do these things because we wanna help the community, nonetheless, we still hear a whole lot of complaining which is unnecessary. The name-calling, the insults, will not be tolerated on the servers or mIRC, and I doubt on the forums, though the forums seem inevitable. Please re-think the way some of you act and how about a thanks every now and then?

A good server mod has protections to prevent/discourage/penalize unsportsmanlike play. This is why typing "kill" at Shmack more than 1 time a minute boots you at Shmack or like why Rook has now added solid sky to the mod so players can't camp in the sky on A2.

      That's sort of hypocritical.

That's like saying "I can play anyway I want but you can't tell anyone about it."

Baker - I said ... "complain about it", I didn't say don't go talk about it. Anyways, of course you'd have a problem

And what's unsportsmanlike play? By saying that, you're being one of those people that try to control how a player players.... then you keep and keep controlling until you're able to beat them. Kind of rediculous, a player may use ANY AND EVERY way to win in the game that he/she feels necessary. Who is anybody else to judge? They're not. So in conclusion, Baker you come off to me as one of those sore losers I was speaking of.

And Sole , you said it wrong:

I would say every player know unsportsmanlike play when they see it.

Kind of rediculous, a player may use ANY AND EVERY way to win in the game that he/she feels necessary. Who is anybody else to judge?
Who are you to say that no one else has a right to judge your play?

You insist you have the right to play any way you choose and then insist that no one else has a right to complain.

So in conclusion, Baker you come off to me as one of those sore losers I was speaking of.
              Have fun with that one.

Anyone who knows me knows that I don't care if I win or lose, winning and losing is not the point of Quake but the enjoying of playing the game.

I think you do a fine job of running the tournaments, do a very good job of admining the server.

I have the right to hold an opinion of how I have sometimes seen you play the game like hiding in the sky for entire rounds on A2. I've quit playing on instances where you've done that even when you were on my team, so how can that have anything to do with winning or losing.

About your thoughts on strategic play:

CAx in rage gives you a limited amount of rockets in match mode. If your strategic play involves camping one end or the elevator in dm3, it's pretty much justified as fair play since you won't be able to spam rockets for long. If the rocket ammo was unlimited, then there could be some valid arguements against it.

Congratz to both Bry4nt and Frenzy for winning the tourney last night. I wish I could have played but I was studying time over time. I wouldn't have been able to play more than 2 games <insert joke where C*S wouldn't have played more than 2 games because his team would have got owned in the first round joke here >. I'll attend whenever possible. I owe Zop a trophy

For the admin discussion you had above, I'm happy if my bans have justifiable reason to it

I don't think there is any inherently unfair way to play DM3 (and maybe any map) in a match, just for the record.

Players camp in Clan Arena and it is a legitimate tactic. In a match, your opponents should have "plans" on how to deal with various unconventional tactics.

/I think there are unfair ways to play DM3 in non-match games on a public server.

First I should say that Frenzy has spent a lot of time doing things like the 2v2 tourney to help the community and get poeple playing, and has done a great job.

As for the strategic play, the way frenzy and bryant played was pretty ridiculous, IMO. For the 2 matches i watched, 1 took 45 min and the other took closer to an hour. I think it's fun to play strategically, but that means more cat and mouse style, where you and moving around, trying to predict your opponents actions, and trying to trick him into predicting your actions wrong. Whether camping for 5 minutes in the same spot waiting for a cheapshot is fair or not, it just makes people not want to play. Also, if everyone took 50 minutes per match, with 10 teams as we had last night, the tourney would literally take SEVEN HOURS.

People can play whatever way they want, but if they play shitty that just means eventually they'll have no one to play with. Last night was a good example of people quiting because they felt other players were ruining the fun, but I certainly wouldn't single Frenzy and Bryant out for it. It's been the #1 complaint since the beginning.

I've been considering possible solutions to this. Health rot is one idea that came up before. After a minute or so players health would start to count down, so players would have to fight or die. However, 1 problem would probably be that if you got in a couple shots against an opponent, you could try to avoid them the rest of the round as health rot would kill them first. Another idea would be to make all players emit a beep or something after a minute or so, so camping in secret would be impossible.

CAx is great because it's author is active in making improvements basd on player feedback. We all owe R00k a big thanks for his work

Thanks r00k! Both the health rot and the emitted beeps sound like grand ideas.

Frenzy: i still need to interview your CTF-hating ass for QCS get in touch with me.

BTW, you could make it so that the Health Rot thing only works if the player hasnt moved from the same general spot in a while. im not sure how that would work, im not a coder, but if thats possible, it would be an idea. it would prevent camping for long periods of time, and also players wouldnt be able to trick the code by pacing back and forth (moving)

or even another idea: timed matches. when the match hits the time limit, the team with the most combined health wins.

The idea of the teams with the most combined health would not be a possible solution.

The idea of this is to stop players from running/evading the entire time. If the team with the most combined health was to win, this would only provoke somebody to run around to keep their health, prolonging the match etc. Although your input is appreciated. As far as I know, there are a couple different things being tested and I'm sure there will be updates as to what the final solution will be.

I'm ready for your interview whenever.

                            P.S.

A big thanks to R00k obviously for keeping up to date on the mod/player feedback. For being around all these years keeping up with coding and the community, what a pimp.

A big thanks to Yellow-5 for keeping my brain in line, (Inside joke), as well as actively participating in being my right hand man with the 2on2's as they are the most active thing in quake right now - as I said before - without him these probably wouldn't be as consecutive as they have been, what a pimp.

A big thanks to Baker for being the know-it-all of quake commands/troubleshooting and keeping a lot of players around by doing so, what a pimp.

And a big thanks to the community for actively participating in feedback, as well as participating in the 2on2's that have became so massively popular, you guys are pimps too.

And a big thanks to Sole for the website, and so many other things, what a pimp.

And a big thanks to everybody else out there that I may have forgotten.

                            Nothing goes unnoticed.

Viper used that health rot on Head Hunters mod. For some reason it lagged the server. Hopefully if used there is a way to tweak that now? Grand idea, I don't play CA much but I don't see CA as being a Camp server at all. Strategic or not. I would hate being the one running around looking for the S.O.B. during a challenge. The maps seem big enough when its a 1 v 1 or even a 2 v 2. Mute is also a great idea IMO. Vote mute is better. Wish we could mute the server from giving the signal on Votes. That's distracting as well. ;(
