Through the years, humanity has been through several wars. Some rightous, some brutal, some hopeless, from the Bronze Era wars between Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, and other waring states, to the merciless Strogg wars fought many light-years from Earth. Three of the most notable battles of recent times were The Slipgate Wars, The Eternal Arena, and the Strogg Wars. Every war has had one thing in common: soldiers. Many human soldiers have fought in every war, millions have died. Due to lack of participants, man-kind has had to resort to cloning, cybernetics, and robotics to fund their war efforts.
State-of-the-Art high-tech androids, dubbed "War Machines" have been in constant production since the beginning of the Strogg Wars. Though they are powerful, durable, and well armed, they lack human cunning and intelligence. Thus, many high-ranking Strogg soldiers are able to render them into scrap metal. Many minorly, critically, and fatally wounded soldiers have resorted to cybernetics so that they may have a second chance at battle. Some perfectly healthy soldiers even volunteer for this practice to give them an edge. These soldiers are dubbed "Cyborgs". However, many protest groups and politics are against the use of Cyborgs in battle, saying that it "makes us no better than the Stroggs." Because of this, the practice and technologies are heavily crippled. Many other able-bodied soldiers at the peak of skill are conscripted for cloning purposes. Those who's intellect and talents in battle surpass those of the average Grunt are called forward for cloning. Due to imperfect cloning technology however, the resulting clones lack the talent and cunning of their originals, giving them battle skills rivaling an average Grunt. New cloning technologies are constantly in the works, and are being tested time and time again, most all of them in vain.
One such experiment however...turned out to be an almost complete success in original replication. Upon reaching maturity, however, the clone not only showed the strength, skill, reflexes, and cunning of his original, but also showed signs of idealism, thus eventually leading to critical defection. The clone attempted to assume command of a mission for a purpose he felt was more efficient than the mission assigned to him and the rest of his unit. The end result was the utter annhilation of his unit. He was the only survivor. Thus, he was imprisoned and sentenced to expulsion. His defection had gone so far, that he escaped prison and fled the reaches of the Quake Marines to find his own place in life. This ex-soldier has been self-codenamed "Death Knight" and labeled as an enemy of the Quake Marines.
His original, however, is a very skilled soldier. His reflexes and sharp-shooting capabilities are nearly unmatched. Because of his hightened skills, he prefers to use instant impact weapons, such as shotguns, bullets, and lightning weapons. His favorite, however, is the railgun. Slower projectile weapons such as blasters, nailguns, grenades and rockets arent something he uses with much more skill than any other Quake Marine. His quick reflexes and sharp aiming often cause him to discharge his weapons in the direction of subtle movements he catches, such as a shifting leaf, or perhaps a small insect. His companions, who claim that it appears as though he is "seeing and shooting at ghosts", are caught off-guard most of the time by this. Thus his comrads have codenamed him "Ghost Stalker".
