  • Mac ProQuake (Universal)

So I bought my Mac 6 months ago and ever since I have been wanting a version of Quake other than the basic version you can find at fruitz of dojo (http://www.fruitz-of-dojo.de/php/download.php4). First, I'd like to say that they did an awesome job creating the Mac quake client and without it being made I do not think I would have ever been able to produde this version of ProQuake. While I was able to combine two source codes togethers I do not consider myself any bit of a programmer.

Being the ProQuake is the defacto Quake client for NQ players it makes sense to have a Mac version, especially considering the rise in Mac popularity. While I could easily run Boot Camp and run Windows on my machine, I find that rather annoying.

To be honest I do not really know of very many people that will be interested in this release, but it's good to have it as an option and I'm sure a few players might want it.

Hopefully I'm going to TRY to produce a Mac verion of Qrack... But that is a bit more work and I can see myself getting confused and bogged down in the additional code. For an experienced programmer it would probably be an easy job, especially for someone who is familar with the Quake source code. For the most part I or someone needs to add the additions to the Mac Xcode project. Xcode is Apple's developer application for building applications/compiling.

Anyway, those interested in ProQuake for Mac can find it here:

Well, it might be that there are a lot less Mac users because until early 2006 I don't believe there was a single improved Quake engine for the Mac for either Quake or Quakeworld (maybe the DarkPlaces Mac port, but I'm sure that wasn't around in 2004; I know an EZQuake port was made -- I think -- in early 2006 and then a FuhQuake port on the Quakeworld side of things).

I'm not much of a fan of the original GLQuake because once you use ProQuake you can never go back (record demos any time, ping in scoreboard, improved aim, bestweapon, loc support, all the other countless "fixes" that aren't obvious at first) despite the fact the ProQuake graphics are unchanged.

Maybe with more and better options available, guys like MacVato, Ron1n and Sabotage will play more. :d

Do you have the source code or project file sitting around for the Mac build so other engine authors with vanilla Quake engines might benefit from your work? (It might be in the dmg file you posted, but hey I don't have a Mac and can't look, hehe).

I could see some of the other authors of faithful-style Quake engines (Enhanced GLQuake, TyrQuake, FitzQuake) or the QuakeSrc.org enthusiasts having interest in trying their hand at Mac compiles.

Btw ... is this only for Intel Macs or does it work on PowerPC chip Macs too?

Great work, Woods! I can remember you posting about Mac ports in the JoeQuake forum back a while ago about wanting to make Mac builds.

It is a Universal binary so it works on both PPC and Intel.

The Mac version of Tenebrae works fine for me.

I was playing some Runequake online with a bunch of people a couple of days ago. Trying to find some more mods that I can play with only 2 or 3 people though.

We went through Co-op on nightmare a few times, fun and all. but a little short!

Insomnia is a blast in co-op ... and quite difficult too even in coop.

Rocket arena is fun even with a small number of players.

Thanks so much! Now I have Quake running great on this iMac 24". You cannot believe how much I have missed good old Quake deathmatch since I got rid of my PC box in favor of a mac for work reasons. Yes, quake4 and quake3 has mac versions but the original savor of Quake1 remains intact in my mind. You cannot compete with nostalgia, I guess.
