knowing how microsoft prefers you use their product before any other product, and in many cases has monopolized many categories of software (most notably, POP Email and Internet Browsers : OutLook Express / Internet Explorer)

They technically dont have to support OpenGL in Windows Vista out of the box (atleast, not without some tinkering on your own behalf!)...its their product they can do as they wish with it,which further enforces the use of DirectX,which further pushes game makers to start using DirectX specifically , and opting out of OpenGL support, which in turn makes Microsoft more money.

The only people who will have a problem with this are the ones too lazy to do any homework or bother asking questions about how to get things operational on the new Windows platform.
I hated XP and held out from using it as long as I could by using Windows 2000 Professional, but with it no longer being updated,I really had no choice but to switch to XP.In about 2 years (maybe 3 or 4) XP will no longer be provided updates, and will become obsolete, and from there on out only 2nd or 3rd party patches for newly found exploits in XP will become availible.

    same old song and dance....

I am using a new laptop pre-loaded with Vista and after installing Quake and then the ProQuake Launcher, GL ProQuake ran just fine.

... although I didn't get the greatest FPS I've ever seen. It seemed to stay between 30-55 most of the time, but maybe somehow the laptop is to blame (I guess [???] ... it's got an nVidia graphics card and an AMD Turion 64 dual core processor.)

A lot of PCs will come with one of those Intel Integrated Media graphics adapters, so I can't speak for those, but AMD equipped PCs like the one I am using aren't going to come with those. Maybe the Intel Integrated Media ones don't have Open GL drivers.

One annoyance, after running ProQuake, Vista nags about something saying the "Color Scheme Has Been Changed" in a nag balloon and then in help says something about how the application in question doesn't support Aero schemes or something (duh! full-screen game).

/Note: I haven't tried any engine except GL ProQuake, so maybe there is some wackiness with some of the more graphically sophisticated GL engines.

/Add: I've been using Vista a couple of hours and I don't really like the clutter all over the place or the effects, it seems to make things a lot more confusing and has a LOT of nags everywhere.

Vista!? Switch to OSX! I can play Quake at 1900 pixels resolution without accelerator (just quake, or proquake) and get super smooth gaming. GL-Quake works great too

              * sits back and watches the carnage *

It's funny, you know, it used to be the other way around.

I think the future of Windows is a nice emulator that runs on top of Unix, letting us play all the nice games from the 90s... any Quake, Doom, Diablo, Baldur's Gate, Starcraft, Thief... Oh wait, we have that already.

I only use windows > linux for C# and ASP.NET. But mono is slowly taking .net over as well

Java and .Net are where the easy money's at nowadays. So I learn languages which the industry puts a demand for.

Best programming language: Java. What's your opinion on that goldy?

You have a good reason there. No doubt.

Of course this is somewhat subjective, but I'll say C/C++, simply because that is what I like, but I'm not a professional coder. It's also nice that they are cross-platform (normally *grr*) and have a long history of successful projects that can be modified/resurrected/stolen/learned from as necessary.

The linux kernel is in C, as is a large number of OSS projects. That's where my interests lie, so not much choice.

I started learning C (and 68K assembler) when I still had an Atari ST ;-) so perhaps I'm being sentimental.

I also have a weak spot for bash scripting. It's cool what some people can do with it. I wrote some scripts once that would set up ISDN on a linux system, simply because there was no good solution before.

Personally I think that Java, C# etc are trying to reinvent the wheel. Java applets may have their place, but nowhere near me. My browser is Java-disabled, my system is Java-free. I hate interpreters and runtime environments with a passion.

I'd put my money on D for the future, but C will live on for many years.

An unrelated note (somewhat), I also think that Web 2.0 is bullshit, so I'm hopelessly old-fashioned.

A completely unrelated note (somewhat), I also think that we are seeing a social and technological decline (and have seen it for 20 years), of which the resurrection and re-selling of things like HTML, Java and DHTML is a part (it's a ridiculous example, but it's true.) Let's not talk about the resurrection and reselling of computer games (like FPS) and even operating systems (*whistle*). Things like Linux, Wikipedia etc. are an exception, not the rule. Quad-core processors are a symptom of stagnation.

Look at the gasoline needs of modern cars. Look at the addiction to gas, oil, and coal and the consequences. Look at poverty in countries like Germany and Russia. Look at the climate change. Then look at the discussions from 20 years ago. That should make you wonder.

                            But I'm digressing. :-)

Hmm, yeah, Lua is interesting, sure. Isn't Lua in Baldur's Gate? Or so I STR.

I wouldn't exactly call Javascript, Java I could turn this into a Java vs C/C++ arguement but I'd rather just state the following. A Java programmer can come up with very valid reasons to use Java over C/C++ and it's just as possible for the exact opposite to happen. Banks and big professional companies usually use java and jsp for forums and such. And one last note, they put Java on Mars

                                C/C++ are fun languages.
