  • Poll: List IRC Channels on QuakeOne HomePage?

I myself don't IRC often, it is very rare except for some of those CA tournaments to figure out what server/team etc., but I do know that IRC is very useful for those wanting information or to get in a game.

I think the GameSurge.net #quake1 channel was a great thing for the player base, but the few times I have been on there have been similar to Monster's quote here:

An outsider would get a very negative impression @ the #quake1 channel from what I have seen there the few times I've been on there. Then again, I haven't been on there in months and have no firsthand experience on the channel in a long time.

I have not been on the #quakeone channel in a long time, but I do not remember seeing any of that or if so -- it was a lot less.

    So the poll:

List #quakeone channel somewhere on homepage, list both #quakeone and #quake1 on homepage or list neither on homepage?

This isn't a question of whether or not to list an IRC channel but rather if the talk on either of the above IRC channels would reflect positively on Quake and the Quake community to an outsider or someone wanting to try Quake out.

Opinions of those that regularly use/visit these IRC channels to have a knowledgeable opinion is valued far more than non-users.

I myself almost never use IRC and therefore have no regular experience with either of these channels so I fall into the non-users category.

Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I visited quake1 many times last summer. quakeone was a lot more polite.

I dont really visit either so I cant say, #qc is good for keeping up with British politics and random QuakeC things, rarely is it not polite, usually at worst PG-13. #darkplaces is usually on the subject of engines, dipping into game design, and LordHavoc has made his presence known just enough on the matter of administrative behavior that the channel should stay on topic unless the majority are interested in the discussion at it is civil. #terrafusion is a place for the latest cute pictures of cats, hardcore pornography, and levels in development. I wouldnt visit it at work myself, if we were allowed to irc during work.

So in short, I didnt contribute to this thread, I just wanted to joke about the British politics thing in #qc, its where I go for my international news!

I dont really know if you should provide a link to the channels as the QuakeOne site unless a leader of the site is an active person in the channel really. Inside3d's java irc client automatically loads #qc and #inside3d, which are channels where the general people in charge are FrikaC, LordHavoc, Error, and myself. So it can be assumed to be representative.

if you want Mr. Rogers or "Barney" format programming or content, watch PBS,dont come to IRC expecting us to be holding hands or giving out

True, but sometimes the people who arent on that level of kindness are just boring dicks that make the entire group they have something in common with look bad.

FYI , each individual brings to the table what they wish to,if they want to be a dick, they will do so, if someone wants to be nice, they will do so, if your one of those types of people who judge an entire community based on one,or a few peoples actions, your more shallow than anyone in any given community.

In the end, this is the internet, you'll find 10x more assholes in one day of being on it,rather than you can find assholes in daily routine life, off the internet,so to expect other wise is ludacris. When you own a channel and have administrative rights even, you are capable of running the channel how you see fit, otherwise, its one of those deals,if you dont want nudity and lapdances being apart of your life, dont go to gentlemens clubs or whore houses

It's not an issue of being polite, it's an issue of the asshats who ruin the validity of a channel with their nonsense bullshit.

in a community, you're going to have that,no matter how much you care,or try,to stop it.stopping it is futile and pointless , ignoring it and focusing on the better points of chat that takes place is the key.

Not interested in stopping it. Chat is chat.

But if listing a channel would have the result of repelling new players -- the opposite of what we want -- then listing it wouldn't be beneficial to the game.

The feeling I am getting from this thread is that #quake1 is for sure probably is a channel that would more than likely turn off new players instead of potentially attract new players (correct me if I am wrong).

                      So what about #quakeone?

Well, to be honest, anyone playing ANY first person shooter game, be it Q3,FarCry,Doom3,Unreal Tournament,CounterStrike, and the list goes on and on and on.... Anyone who plays ANY online game, not being restricted to FPS games, has dealt with assholes. Q1 is no different other than its old school, your trying to acknowledge a problem, that really isnt a problem, when looked at on a large scale of gaming community's. EVERY COMMUNITY HAS ASSHOLES! Listing an IRC channel is not going to repel players, if they want to truely play Quake1, they will play it,they wont connect to an IRC server/channel, have a bad experience in IRC,and say "omg they was so rude on IRC,I'm not going to play Q1 because of that".... The more likely to happen, would be they either wont connect to IRC again,or they wont go into that channel again.I'm not saying it couldnt happen, but in all likely hood,it wont happen. If you have to ,list #quakeone as a "website maintained/operated channel" , and create a sublisting of Clan and otherwise channels (see The Clan Willing pool for a list) and a statement about how these channels arent operated/administrated by QuakeOne.Com , and some other shit like you see on infomercials (The views/claims/opinions/information/conduct/etc expressed bla bla bla)

Thats such BS baker. I feel there is more of a "#quake1 isnt #quakeone , so we shouldnt support or advertise its existance" mentality.... or , #quake1 wasnt created in the eyes of quakeone.com , so therefor we shouldnt acknowledge it on our website. If it doesnt get listed,it wont be because of a real reason with a real problem,or a real concern for deturring Quake1 players. And face it, over 50% of the "New-Comers" to Quake1 will be returning gamers from back in the day, and less than 50% will be from teenagers or gamers who doesnt even know Q1 exists.

I don't own irc anymore. I think last time i did was in the 90's. Seems a little dated. Furthermore i hate downloading new IM progs usually just stick with the one i got and if noone else has it oh well. Then again i just consider myself a casual player and don't have a need to be around to setup or organize toury's/clan matches or anything anymore.
                          -just my 2 cents yo.

I think you are right. Let people decide for themselves where to hang out.

I only started this thread/poll/discussion to explore the topic of IRC and it's impact in helping players -- no other purpose.

I think you are mistaken if you think I believe GameSurge #quake1 is a "bad" channel. My angle was newbie friendliness/outsider perception.

I used to think of IRC like that and I don't irc except when I need something, but it's value in setting up games and getting real-time help with something is invaluable. But yeah, I can understand where you are coming from.

After reading your post and thinking things over, perhaps it would be best to list all the channels related to this community (#quakeone, #quake1, etc.) + #qc/#darkplaces/terrafusion (#tf) including clan channels and anything else related to getting a game together somewhere on the site.

I have some cool ideas, but I guess I'll talk to Sole and Yellow and then see their thoughts.

yea, list them all,and if need be,provide a warning beside each channel that could contain controversial subjects,or "might contain rude" or something like that.

all that IRC has to offer should be offered
