  • New CTF mod

    I've been gathering thoughts on what could be changed in the current CTF mods to make another successful mod. Baron said I should post my thoughts so I'll do just that. I'm just adding off of ctf.clanhdz.com with my ideas. I always wanted to play ctf without hook but I thought of another alternative.

    Before and during game, a player can change between two types of classes: Runners and Soldiers. Runners get hook but can not pick up weapons 6 through 8. Soldiers don't get hook but they can use all available weapons. Anyone can grab the flag.

    The game would be private like it normally is in ctf.clanhdz.com but there would be a CCing rule which would make the game a lot simpler. Players can't CC into a match if the team is already full (if it started as a 3v3, you can't have more than 3 players per team). I think this would help cure the problem in some ctf games where people leave and you have to go through a voting process in game to allow other players in.

    This is just a basic idea I was also considering that Runners shouldn't get the same benefits from power ups as Soldiers and that Runners shouldn't be allowed to pick up the RA (or give the Runner 200 YA if they pick it up). Perhaps the quad should make the Runner run/hook a tad faster and the pent should give the Runner some resistance but not god mode.

    I'd like others to give their input on this broad idea.

    Thoughts... Hook should be able to outdo a good bunnyhopper, otherwise youll just have good bunnyhoppers going Soldier and doing more damage.

    For runes, I dont know which class would get this, but they have it as Self and General bonuses. So which ever class is the Self, they get the normal rune bonus, but for the class that is the General, its smaller benefits that act as an aura (smaller increments of regen, less damage reduction, slightly faster shooting, smaller attack bonus) increasing whichever class it has, to act together (whether running the flag or defending).

    For powerups... Dont know about quad and ring, but you could make the pent be more like the shield in Q3A, rockets, grenades and shaft do 10% damage - so you fall back to their tier of weapons to fight them effectively.

    Another consideration is... flag touch, flag respawn, or flag carry to return to base?

      I'm not worried about bunnyhoppers Runners with hook can reach hard to get to areas that Soldiers wouldn't be able to get to without a GL and RL.

      ctf.clanhdz.com doesn't use runes

        Errr ... how can you change any of it?

        1) The mod on HDZ is closed source and .. well .. 2) You don't have the expertise to do any of these modifications yourself.

        This is a little bit more skeptical than I usually tend to post, but you've posted things like how you have permission from Slot Zero to add Runes and such to WhiteHot (why would you need Slot's permission anyway? Runes have been in Quake long before even Artifact Quake was made by Singe) and then didn't do anything with that.

        Although Mindz was too harsh, in my opinion, in that other thread in his critique of something else you posted, this thread to me seems disingenuous because you do not have source code to modify nor the capability to modify it yourself if you did.

        At some point, if you want to have credibility you have to at least act upon or do something with something you've posted.

          I was thinking of adding this as a ctf option in the whitehot mod. I started today on recoding what has already been coded in whitehot. Doing this is not as fun as the first time. I actually wanted to continue on to the main parts of whitehot but my hard-drive ruined that.

          ps - this is an idea thread. Please keep it like that.

            The XCTF source code is not bad; Bam did some kick ass work with that and it is only a couple of vote options away from being a very strong CTF code base. I haven't looked at the stock CRCTF code in the source codes but I would presume it would be solid as well.

            Because we never chat, the only credibility you'd see from me would be in the forums. So give me some time recoding everything then a few days after that and I'll show you progress.
