    I'd ...

    1. check your firewall (hope you don't use Norton's firewall -- it blows)
    2. check your anti-virus (try disabling it temporarily, some of them do weird things)
    3. If you just got a router/changed routers or switch ISPs or moved, you might have 2 network connections and Quake is using the wrong one.

If you have problem #3, you can try the ProQuake Launcher and switch the "Connect: Default" (by clicking it) to "Connect: Local IP" try to connect and then try "Connect: Net IP" and try to connect.

Problems like the one you have do suck.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Maybe he is using zone alarm? I agree though it is on his machine. Either a firewall is blocking him or he needs to put the -ip thing in his execution? Worth a try.

Long shot but try opening port 26000-26005 (most commonly used by Quake)
        e|------------------------0---------------
        B|---------------0^1----------------1----
        G|---------------2------2------0^2-------
        D|---------------2-------2--2-------------
        A|---------------0------------------------
        E|----------------------------------------

quake relies on different ports, those are just the ports for the server.yugo2heck has a extensive knowledge in quake and the whole port stuff. I recall a conversation about quake and its port usage at quakebord.net
