  • resizing textures

hello, i've downloaded the 10mb pack with textures on this site. these were resized QRP textures, and they were a LOT smaller in size than the originals.

    how was this done?

    Automation

I wrote a complex program to rip the original textures out the wads, the program assessed the dimensions and used FreeImage to resample the image to double the resolution, but admittedly FreeImage seems to have a bug with 8-bit palettes so IrFanView did the rest of the work.

But the end result is that the textures are all exactly twice as large as the originals.

I haven't, but if you'd like me to I can make 2 sets and they'd probably be available tomorrow.

        Set 1 = 24 bit
        Set 2 = 8 bit

And you could decide which set you wanted.

              Sure, no problem.

It might be a day or 2 because it is the weekend.

Update: this should be completed about 8 hours from now. I'm in the process of wrapping up another project and am trying to get that off my list.

Here is the 8 bit set at 2x resolution (twice id texture size so a 32 x 32 texture in the map is a 64x64 QRP texture)

                  http://www.quake-1.com/files/texture...ution-8bit.zip

I'm a little shocked at the size, the zip is 2.5 MB. It contains 590 files (luma channels included) and I check the dimensions and everything looks in order.

Here is the 24-bit one (17.5 MB):

                    http://www.quake-1.com/files/texture...tion-24bit.zip

And apparently the above 8-bit resolution set used the actual size of the original texture instead of doubling it. I've fixed that and here is the "correct" double resolution 8-bit set (6.6 MB)

is there any possibility i could get my hands on this program you wrote? it would make things a lot easier for me (i'm resizing textures to make nquake (new project) smaller)...

Well at least right now it's sort of a mess and I'd be embarrassed by it :d

See .. when I started working on it, I just made it simple (and difficult) but it didn't do things like resize the luma textures. Then I got the idea to make it user friendly and then stopped halfway for some reason or another (probably because I realized it was a ton of work for something that all of 5 people might be interested in).

The reason it took it me a few days (to do the resize for the textures) is because I wanted some extra time for the headache of remembering what worked vs. didn't work (because I hadn't used in a very long time).

Let me think some more about this, maybe it wouldn't take too much time to clean up. I'll look into it in a couple of days.

Ah it's a mess. I checked it out and remembered why I stopped working on it. If you have something that you'd like processed let me know and post a link.

Someday, I'll clean up that utility. I'd probably have to mostly rewrite it from the ground up.

On the upside: I have an idea to increase the quality using approximately the same file size, having it use JPG for complicated images and PNG for less complicated ones. This merely involves having it save the files in both JPG and PNG and selecting the smaller image. This should allow using a higher resolution but maintaining a similar file size.
