  • good coop

i want to know some things:

why it is that when i play mp on vanilla quake with id maps using dp the lag is seldom and all assets accounted for, yet when combined with a mod or expansion there are missing assets. i change to another engine for greater compatability with quake c and the lag becomes horrendous (my theory is that netquake instead of qw was used because of quake c)

i have some source ports other than darkplaces (which i prefer) and so i would like to know if there is another more preferred port for coop, something more suitable to running quake c

a list of any good coop servers

Missing assets? As in, items missing?

missing assets as in the gravity in the first expansion's hard difficulty room did not alter the gravity, the drawbridge door in the beginning of said expansion's level did not exist, ect...

You'll definately run in to wierd problems if you run mods on top of the expansion packs. It's doable (and can be fun) but unless the mod is specifically coded for the expansion none of the new features will work. None of this should have any bearing on your ping though that is something to do with the engine/your service provider/trying to play on a server thats on the other side of an ocean/downloading bazillions of DVD rips off bittorrent and trying to play quake at the same time. Which I've discovered is not a good idea.

It should be noted that DP as an engine was created for modders and mods, LordHavoc started work on it a while after the engine source release in dismay over the fact that no one was doing anything but graphical features it seems.

I play SoA with DP fairly often, the gravity changes worked just fine for me. And I am yet to encounter a missing surface or some such in any mod. The only oddity I encounter in DP is the occasional item or monster may be found floating rather than resting on the floor, because DP is more sensitive to bounding box issues than other engines.

I will say outright to you regarding running anything for Quake, it is my personal opinion that your best bets are DarkPlaces, FitzQuake, or honestly just play it in glquake or winquake. Or hell, go grab TurtleQuake and enjoy the per poly collision (trace an sng over a fiend's tail without it taking damage, cool stuff).

Coop is usually done in a pickup sense. Hang out in channels on irc and ask people if they want to coop. Happens in #qc every now and then, usually with a random mod to spice things up. RenegadeC, Chillo, Monster and I played a little bit of BloodMage the other day. Completely spontaneous.

Registered FvF was taken down a long time ago, mostly because of inactivity. And the host, Aalchemy, was having huge computer problems.
