  • Unix Quake Tools

OK, I didn't find a thread like this, so let's make a small list of useful tools for the Linux, Solaris, BSD or even OSX Quaker. Only listing open-source projects that run natively (no emulators.)

    Netquake engines:

    Joequake, Linux x11/glx
QRack, Linux glx (1.60.1 ported by QuDOS)
Tremor, Linux glx (another QuDOS port)
    Nehquake-bjp Linux glx? (again QuDOS)
    Darkplaces, Linux/OSX glx
    Tyrquake, Linux/BSD x11/glx
    Proquake, Linux/Solaris x11/glx
    QuakeForge, Linux/BSD? x11/glx

Proquake compiles and runs, but the cheatfree module only works with precompiled binaries.

    Quakeworld engines:

    Fuhquake, Linux x11/glx, OSX
    EZQuake, Linux/BSD/OSX x11/glx
    Tyrquake, Linux/BSD x11/glx
    QuakeForge, Linux/BSD? x11/glx
Demonquake, FreeBSD (based on Fuhquake) see Ports collection
    FTE, Linux x11/glx

    Map editors:

    Quest, all POSIX compliant unices
    GTKRadiant, Linux/OSX/FreeBSD

    Map compilers:

Tyrutils by Tyrann, Linux/BSD, contains treeqbsp, vis and tyrlite

hmap by Lord Havoc, Linux, another complete set (can't do sunlight)

    QuakeC compilers:

FrikQCC (building on Linux didn't work for me, binary does)

    FTEQCC, Linux

    PAK and WAD tools:

Quake Editing Utilities (qeu03), Unix (Linux, Sun confirmed) contains unpak/repak, unwad/rewad, unwad2/rewad2 (can not make texture wads), unbsp, sprview

    Graphics/texture editing:

GIMP, the premiere Unix image editor.

lmp2pcx, converts .lmp and .wad files (texture wads) to .pcx, .mip and .tga files. By Lord Havoc.

    Model editing:

    Blender, a much-used 3D modeller

.mdl exporter for Blender by Preach (is this working?)
No .mdl importer yet though (perhaps he would make one?)

    Sound/sample editing:

    Sweep
    Rezound
    GLAME
    Audacity
    sox
    sndfile-convert
    sndfile-resample
    LADSPA plugins
    ALSA utils

    Other:

/lpm2pic, lump to pcx/pic converter, from the Hammer of Thyrion Hexen2 port (I think)
    pic2lmp, create .lmp files.
    There's also a bsp2wad somewhere.
dzip for Linux (comes with Joequake)
    cwad2, rips wads from pakfiles

    What's missing:

    - .mdl import for Blender (Preach?)

    - wad2 building utility (something that takes bmps and produces a texture wad)

Please contribute anything I forgot and feel free to correct me, especially regarding demo recording/recamming stuff, server browsers, stuff like Qizmo and so on. Just tell us what works for you.

We should also update this with links at some point, but I have no time now. There's always google.

I hope this will become helpful in the future.

otherwise we wouldn't need this thread. This isn't a Wine ad.

          Indeed
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

FTEQCC does work on Linux, but I don't know if an official build is provided...
            16:03:04 <gb> when I put in a sng, I think I might need nails
16:03:30 <gb> the fact that only playtesting tells me that probably means that my mind is a sieve

I thought DemonQuake was based off JoeQuake, just FYI.

The FreeBSD ports collection says it's based on Fuhquake, however I've not actually tried it.

Tyrlite seems not bad at all compared to Light-bjp, I'm just running some tests. Perhaps I can bug Tyrann to hack in one or two more features...

This list isn't worth it without links to the files/sites.
Also please get in touch with the maintainer of http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Quake-HOWTO.html so the infos will be included in that #1 Linux Quake resource.

The Linux Quake Howto's Q1 section seems a bit brief. It doesn't list Proquake, Fitzquake or EZquake... and those engines are pretty hard to miss if you're the slightest bit interested.

I will eventually make a Unix Quake page with the focus on Quake 1, containing various HOWTOs and tutorials both technical and practical.

Spirit, would you host such a page?

Updating original post with links now.

Oh, correction. It does list Proquake, under Multiplayer ^^

Fitzquake is Windows-only. Proquake is for multiplayer, so that's right. And yes, it misses ezQuake.
Sure I could host it but I would much more like to see that exisiting Quake-HOWTO.html updated. More infos on one place = better.

                            Eh... I was tired.

That's right, in principle. However, also "in-depth Q1/hipnotic/Quoth information > general Quake series information."

His page is too shallow, looking bad, missing things like Joequake Nehahra support (missing Joequake entirely...) and he doesn't include infos on sample/texture/model editing nor coding information, nor mapping, nor trickjumping tutorials, nor tactics, nor links/pictures concerning 24bit textures/custom models/huds/whathaveyou or "how to use Logitech mice under X" tutorials... no bots... no weapon and monster specifics... I could think of more...

                            No pictures either...

And before I mail him and say "do this and that" I could just do it myself. When I get to it I mean. Incidentally I can make nice-looking websites too.

                            *shrug*
