  • Quake on a Stick?

I'm looking to build a portable Quake environment that I can shlep around on a USB key and play wherever an "unlocked" computer can be found. What engines/clients should I include (I'd want at least one good software rendering client for machines which lack decent OGL support and one GL client for the rest) What mods do I include to show off just how awesome Quake can be to those who can't see beyond the fairly simple graphics? Do I really need to waste space on DOSbox if I want to play QuakeRally or is there some engine that it will work with...

Answers to these (and other) questions are welcome

Do you just save the game to the Flash? Same as you would to the C Drive?

Basically, yes. As far as I know. The important thing is to pick clients that are broadly compatible with as wide a range of hardware as possible so that you never get "stuck" in a situation where you can't run Quake with nice performance...

do you guys play the game from the USB stick, or do you first copy it over to the hd, play it from there, then delete it?

The flash stick is usually seen by windows as a removeable drive storage device, basically another drive, which means that from a technical persective you should be able to do either although personally I'd probably go for the Hard drive option where suitable. I've ocassionally worked on some systems with dreadful read speeds from flash devices.

              Kind regards

A neat idea, I should try that too since I'm often away from home... I usually drag my laptop around in trains etc. which is suboptimal because it's quite heavy.

Clients are rather small, so packing a varied bunch of them might not be the worst idea.

Quake Rally... well there is Checkered Flag: Gold Cup, which I remember running with Joequake... it's another neat racing mod.

Read speeds from USB storage: Find a client that loads maps quickly and deactivate the console log if it isn't.

I'm used to starting my Linux clients via bash scripts, is there something similar for Windows?
