  • A few funny Quake-related memories....

These are all true stories from when I was in elementary school

    -----------------------------------

About 6th or 7th grade my elementary school science teacher decided to quit. So we got this guy named Mr. Smith, who was a cool guy but didn't teach very well (he ended up getting fired and we had this lady who was strict as hell [and I think was sexist too]).

Anyway, one of our projects with Mr. Smith was to write a small report about the discovery and development of one of the elements on the periodic chart.

Myself being the quake fan I was, I chose "Argon". And to this day, Argon is STILL my favorite element.

    -----------------------------------

I also remember telling one of my priests about one of the clans I was in at the time. I didn't say anything about the clan's initials, but I simply said, "They're called the 'Guardians of the Heavens', so they're like God's heavenly army."

Ironically, the initials for my old clan were GotH.

He didn't really think anything of it. I'm sure he was actually ignoring me.

    -----------------------------------

We had these little field trips called "retreats", which were like little religious things to help us find a better understanding of who God is and what kind of person we are supposed to be. (I went to a private elementary school)

On one of these retreats, we had a little discussion in a small group. I asked the group leader, "Is it okay to like something without liking the meaning of it?"

"What would that be?", the group leader asked.

"Well, I kinda like pentagrams. I'm not satanic or anything. You see, there's this video game I play....", were the words I said before the guy interrupted me.

"No you can't like pentagrams. That would be like Jesus driving down the road in a car that has pentagrams and 666 all over it.", he said.

How is Argon related to Quake unless youre stretching it to Armagon?

I lead a young adult retreat this weekend actually...

I enjoyed being considered a cheater at my highschool... 8 years ago... because I used the mouse in Quake. They thought it was dumb, but then Id point out how I was always at least 50 frags ahead of the next person, and had never been killed.

Oh there was a quake server called quake.argon.org. It was a RQ server (or known as "Artifact" Quake back then).

Argon.org (http://www.argon.org/artifact-rjs/) was a very popular server running a version of Singe Bousman's Artifact Quake. It was maintained by Roderick Schertler and the mod was called Artifact-RJS after getting consent from Bousman to improve the mod.

Argon.org, which was known as the Marlinspike server - I believe, later became quake.schnoggo.com after having to switch hosts.

In 2002, Roderick handed off the mod (and the server) to Slot Zero who has improved the mod ever since. The Marlinspike server at some point got renamed the Rune Quake server, but as other servers ran Slot Zero's improved Rune Quake, this server is more commonly referred to as "Shmack" (quake.shmack.net), as the dns distinguishes it from other servers running the mod.

By the lineage, the Shmack server has been around at least since 1999, maybe earlier but I started playing in 1999 and don't know much about before that period.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Ah, Ive never been fluent on the server scene honestly... Id just connect and play... Though for a while many many years ago there was a German server where you could choose the deathmatch mode, the map, timelimit, fraglimit, restrict/allow powerups and even had DarkMatch. Setup for 1on1s with a nice spectator system.

My "Artifact" Rune Quake timeline goes something like this (in the order of where I have played):

                Argon --> Widomaker --> Shmack --> Fear

I've never even heard of Argon. I guess I always used to play at MTOWN when it was around.

Okay I know, bringing up a really old thread, but I rememebered a bunch of other stuff:

On CTF one time a friend of mine was on the Red Team. However, when I came in, instead of saying, "Go Red Team", I said, "Red Team Is Going Down!" The guy laughed and said, "Join in so I can kick your ass!"

On The Pain Maze, a guy was shooting where you get the super nailgun, and I snuck up and killed him with a rocket launcher. His corpse flew across the big water room and landed on a distant pillar.

On The Place Of Two Deaths, that top hallway where you shoot the wall to get to the 100 health platform, I was shooting at someone real close by when someone else flew past the two of us....RIDING ON A ROCKET!! I don't know how it was done, but we looked at him when he did it, and then looked back at each other and said, "Did you just see that?!"

One time on The Underearth, I got bored so I changed my name to "Easy Kill", and ran around the room axing the torches on the walls, saying "GOTTA PUT THEM OUT!! AARRGGHHH!!"

Another CTF one - I joined one team and accidentily hit "p", which earlier was my suicide button (when a level ended I used to suicide). Well, I started to keep htting it and the team I was on lost a lot of points. They started screaming, "KICK HIM! KICK HIM!!"

I once shot a man in the Bad Place just to watch him respawn.
