WTF is going on with Quake. I get on speaknow with Crazy and Tunda and some guy named Dennis Fong or something starts talking shit. I thought it was Omi. So we went to rage and then the IOV guys follow us and start attacking Tunda. What the hell guys, this is a 12 year old game. Relax. This was pretty ridiculous

          Another good thread

It's just about time for the ignore command.

Too much of this happens. Time to solve this problem once and for all.

There was an attempt to solve this problem with admin-mute capability. But usually the admin is not around and it's a flawed method anyway.

Likewise cl_mute (like Qrack has) mutes everyone.

What we need is a way anyone can:

          1. Ignore someone in particular
          2. To mute the troublemaker for them only
          3. In a way the troublemaker knows their messages are not seen
          4. Needs to be supported by the server.

Shouldn't be hard to do, either.

Did the "Player connected" spam problem get solved yet btw?

Even though this problem is far and few its still an issue. I seem to remember someone talking about muting the player for 10 seconds when they connect.

Baker this would be absolutely beautiful. If you throw it in with the anti-wallhack I would gladly host it. Or however you do it. I'm sure this would reduce quite a bit of conflict so long as nobody is stubborn and just keeps talking shit back to the troublemaker.

How about a mute IP function? Rather than player name. Players muted usually just reconnect.

ProQuake 3.99h already has pq_connectmute <seconds> on the server side.

It defaults to 3 seconds for a dedicated server, but 7 or 10 seconds might be better.

                    This prevents reconnect and spamming.

Maybe there should be a pq_reconnectmute where it keeps track of recent connection and if it sees the same ip reconnecting and it happens, say, more than 3 times they get an automatic 60 second mute period.

Or maybe the ignore feature remembers the ip address of the ignored player and a reconnecting player gets the same settings as before if the ip matches.

Anyway, this problem has needed some sort of way to address it for a long time. There are some other problems similar to this I've been thinking about lately.

However, at the end of the day, some people are going to cause trouble no matter what is done. If you have reasonable measures to prevent certain behaviors and someone tries something to workaround it, then they need banned. 5% of the players are 95% of the problem.

But we don't have reasonable measures .. yet.

This behavior noted in this thread is fairly normal now. It happens a lot. Sort of difficult to ban someone for something that a lot of ppl do.

But if you create a new "normal" and have the server take care of a lot of the problem, then everyone knows what the rules are and then if someone goes to extraordinary lengths to still cause problems ... they've identified themselves as that part of the 5% of players mentioned above.

Well I think we know why now that Karl Hungus guy doesn't have admin anymore on Rage.

True, cl_mute was to silence the jibber-jabber of the talk.wav sound. cl_mute 1 silences mm1, cl_mute 2 silences both. This was for people wanting to play quake not play #quake irc... though the messages still are displayed.

I would suggest use of the /ignore command be in the same way as "identify".
                              ]ignore
                              1.> Bob
                              2.> Skippy
                              3.> JoeMontanna
                              4.> Mr. TeaLeaf
Who would you like to ignore?
                              ]3
JoeMontanna (192.168.1.100) added to your ignore list.

This way, no matter what server that player will always be ignored.
                              ignorelist and unignore would follow.

But sadly this would be the same as making faces at a blind man
