  • Poll: New forum rule "Keep posts respectful of others"

New forum rule: "Keep posts respectful of others" i.e., no name calling - Yes or No

Lately it seems we have a problem that really wasn't much of a problem in the past, lots of childish posts.

I think it is important that the forum is open, but I think personal attack posts/threads are unnecessary and make the community look bad.

And if the community looks bad, well, if you visited this site for the first time and saw some of these childish threads, what would you think of this site and this community.

A lot of time and effort has been put into this site and this community by a ton of different people, and not for the intent of petty little flame wars?

There should be a rating system for each post. If a person gets a large number of bad post votes (example, 100 bad votes from at least 50 people) then an alert pops up for the moderators. This at least brings the issues to the mod's attention. Maybe a 1 week ban from quakeone.com should be the worst case scenario.

If you just had set rules like "be respectful" then people will always find holes and there will be childish arguments started all over again. But if you let the community vote then it's pretty solid.

Yea, i second Canadian*Snipers idea! I think i'm the one who discussed it with him.

But still, being respectful to others is what keeps the forums running smooth

Well, I don't think we need a complicated algorithm to solve a problem that can rather easily be addressed.

If you just had set rules like "be respectful" then people will always find holes and there will be childish arguments started all over again. But if you let the community vote then it's pretty solid.
As a general rule of thumb, most forums with flaming problems it is a small percentage of people doing 98% of problems.

I think if this becomes a rule, it shouldn't be too hard to change the status quo and curb most of this behavior.

I think it is everyone's common interest to want to have a community that others view a "nice place".

How about , play nicely on the forums , or dont play on the forums at all? Just because you get banned from the forums doesnt mean you'll quit quaking.

I feel there has been way too much coddling already , you shouldnt have to create rules to keep people in line....

Re-emphasis , If you ban someone from these forums, they wont quit playing quake. Just dish out a 1week temp ban,and allow them to atleast view their Personal Message's , so they can read a PM that tells them why they got the 1week temp ban,and if they persist being a dick immediately afterwards, just ban them.

edited PS: This will curb all "I must defend myself" excuses as well. If 1 person starts shit, and the 2nd allows themselves to return fire/flames , then slap them both.

These are grown adults we're talking about, not kindergarden kids,if they cant keep it civil then show them the door.

Voting for tougher moderation with more active mods, but this works also. Some communities are able to police themselves as I've come to notice (as a mod in other forums), this one unfortunately can't but maybe some day.

there is no need to police, take reference to my last post.

simple, effective, and weeds out the riff raff.

That's a great point. I hadn't thought of that benefit.

It's pretty basic human instinct to want to respond to an insult in kind.

Yes, it is a basic instinct indeed, but thats where most issue's become group oriented. If there is a no-tolerance for the bullshit type mentality, and maybe give everyone 1week to read the changes being implemented and acknowledge them, you could then nip trouble makers in the ass and once and for all be done with the childish behaviour. Examples are Omicron and Tia , had they immediately recieved bans for 1 week, then been unbanned after the 1 week, they would have had two choices, either keep the drama in PM's or in-game , or be banned.

i voted yes. we need something better. i'm starting to lose clan members because of the forums crap, and these forums undoubtedly play such a central role in the community. I dont think we need to come up with some new solution though--I think it'd be good to look at other communities and see what they've done and how it's worked out. i'm unable to say personally, cuz i only go to the TU forums and the runequake forums, which are both much smaller than these. but flaming and disrespect are endemic to the internet, and many other large forum communities must have faced this already and solved it, so we should ask what they did

Good idea but it will fail.. Why? because your lucky if you can get 50 people to vote!! or click a button. You could easily get 5 people to click anything you post whenever you post.

Posts should be respectful on the board in a game style way. You guys are always calling each other idiots and stupid and whatever. So the question would be.. Would you feel safe with that rule knowing that say for example that you calling Yellow an asshole in fun wasn't taken that way? You should be able to agree to disagree though and I think that's where the problem is. And we do have the Ignore feature already. That is the best tool on this board.

Sorry I should of been more clear.
I don't mean police literately, just some communities are able to take good care of themselves and keep the BS to a minimum in a sort of natural progressive way.

I dont so much as mind the flame wars... it's an internet message board, there's bound to be flame wars... my concern is people trashing existing threads with flames or starting flame wars in the Quake forum. If you want to start flame threads, do so in the Chat-o-Rama forum and keep it out of the Quake forums.

This is partly my fault because I haven't been moderating as much as I should but from now on I'm going to start moving threads to the appropriate forums when I see them.
