  • Speaknow Changes

    Some of the admin functions have now been disabled on Speaknow. No admins will be able to kick/ban/mute for the time being. New admin features have been added to manage the game, such as ability to move players from 1 team to another.


    Also, there is now an optional map rotation. On maps such as dm3, q1edge, and q3dm6, the map will not rotate. Warp to one of the rotation maps, and the rotation begins. Currently the rotation maps are:
    sanity
    dm6
    ultrav
    a2
    aerowalk

    Warp back to dm3 or whatever, and the rotation stops and it stays on that map.

    These changes have been in place for about 2 weeks. They apply to rage as well.

    Edit: forgot...grenades now require 2 rockets (but still do normal damage) to reduce nade spam. Also, on rage rockets are currently set to 30 instead of 50. Let us know how this works....

    Some explanation of the admin changes....

    The problem is, even when kick/ban/mute is entirely deserved, and asked for by everyone on the server besides the offending player, there is too much blow back. There are too many drunken/cokehead/roid raged adolescents who see abuse of authority in every action. Also, both rage and speaknow have always been administered how the majority of the community asked for them to be admined. The community has requested such a change, so we'll see if it works.

    The select few who just show up to ruin the fun can be perma-banned, or there may be new features such as perma-mute or vote-mute to deal with them.

      On the note of CAx, it would be immensely helpful if CAx used the feature in RuneQuake that spawns players at item locations when the # of players > # of spawn points. The logic of the code, if I recall, is that it detects the presence of a player at the existing spot and if that spot is not free it uses item locations as alternate spawn locations.

      I thought Rook had some sort of solution for that in the past, but it doesn't seem to be working anymore??? Case in point, 7 players on Sanity causes 2 players to spawn at same place.

      This problem is certain to affect maps like ultrav, dm6 and so forth.

        Ya because of this the rotation maps are limited to 2 teams, pldown set to 3. Or couldn't we create some custom .ent files?

          Aerowalk is a good 2v2 map. It doesn't play well on popular servers.

            I'm also not sure it belongs, it can't really support a 3v3. I'd prefer q3dm6, as even though it's big it's open and easy to find opponents. It seems to play well on roots but everyone I asked said they didn't want it in the rotation.

              I like the map rotation.
              I dont think it should limited to 2 teams only. I also dont think it should PL down to 3 players. Especially on maps like Edge.

              I think the answer is to place in custom spawn points or do the runequake thing baker is talking about.

              Limitations on a mod make it less fun. Sometimes it is more fun to play with 3 teams. Some maps can handle 4 or more per team.

                You should definately consult with Phenom and Baker about the map rotation. When they set the map rotation for Dredd, it was insanely awesome. It took them quite awhile to get feedback, etc on which maps should be in rotation, and eventually they had a near perfect rotation. Bring those maps into rotation.

                  Disco as I said just the rotation maps are set to 6 players in at one time, max. This is because they don't have enough spawns set for more. If there was an option for total number of players in at one time, so people could do 3v3 or 2v2v2 or 2v3v1 or whatever..but there isn't there is max teams and pldown. As baker and I were discussion some of them just need to be fixed so they have more spawns, but all of these are still smallish maps that play well with fewer players.

                  Dm3 is set to pldown 3, max teams 4, q1edge is set to pldown 5 max teams 4, and q3dm6 is set to pldown 5, max teams 2 (due to only 10 spawns, players spawning under map).

                  All the rotation maps are small well-liked maps that have proven to play well with ca. We were thinking that the rotation would work well for small/medium games but for bigger games people would still prefer to play dm3, edge, or q3dm6.

                  Frenzy as I said I'm not sure aerowalk fits in that well, other suggestions would be considered to replace it but we'd like to keep the rotation list to 5.

                    Aerowalk won't work, we tried it on roots and it made a ton of people quit when the server was full.

                    Could you maybe make a "smart map change option" like runequake has, where it detects the # of people and changes the map accordingly?

                    Example: 6 people, perfect for dm3. 4 people, perfect for aerowalk. 8 people, perfect for q1edge or q3dm16. 10 people, perfect for q1edge or q3dm16. 6 people, perfect for sanity or ultrav.

                    just a suggestion. ask slot or whoever coded RQ if its possible, it would take all of the guesswork / rotation out of it.

                      I didn't say anything about aeorwalk But for example, GENDM1 was LOVED by the community, why is this not in the rotation?

                        Gendm1 has huge hole in it litterally (remember? by your watch tower)

                        But its in the map rotation at Roots, though I don't know why it doesn't rotate to that map!

                        To Yellow no.5, Good job on thinking of "DM3 until people want to rotate" thats genius. Though from my experiences on fully utilizing map rotation on all 3 servers I admin, people fancy the warp dm3 whenever they want their "fix".

                        Its a nice option you've thought up but its kind of pointless if people can just warp to DM3 and it stays, I can see big games possibly switching to q3dm6qw or even possibly edge but its like it almost adds an extra step if people want to either play DM3 or rotation.

                        Poor Yellow no.5, everyones pushing their ideas on you and you're just tryn to make everyone happy.

                        Lets see how Speaknow does with this feature, maybe its more then it seems!

                        Its great that Speaknow is trying to grow out of that "DM3 only" rut that most CA servers use to get stuck in.

                          Phenom, whether or not you realize it, Quake would be so much better off if you and Yellow No. 5 would get a long. Or at least treat each other with respect.

                          Neither of you will probably like each other (I can hope though, can't I?), but infighting among the top is a major problem of this community.

                          I don't see how Quake can grow if the people that make things happen can't respect one another.

                          The resources and infrastructure exist to make another attempt at regrowing the community, everyone has learned some valuable lessons from the past. But it certainly can't happen if the most valuable people are more devoted to "the past" than the future.

                            I'm just looking for a unison solution to a scattered problem

                            Its obvious Yellow no.5 and me have put the past behind us, I would hope that soon "everyone" will come to a focal point where a real set in stone plan can be made.

                            I'm more then willing to hear people's ideas and work on new ways to push this community forward, that should be obvious, I'm sure Yellow no.5 is trying to do the exact same thing.

                            Yellow no.5 should know by now I'm not aginst him, but only giving my thoughts on his subject, I may seem blunt at times, but I'm practically incapable of lying and hiding my feelings.

                            I'm not rebeling with anyone with the Roots server, I would hope that anyone who thinks that ask themself, "would Quake be better without another CA server, or better?"

                            As it is right now I spend 90% of my time trying to get Roots to catch on, I occasionally play at Speaknow, I don't spam "COME TO ROOTS EVERYONE!" when I'm on the servers I don't even mention Roots while I'm on any other servers, the people who come to Roots do so willingly, I have done VERY little advertising of Roots. To me that shows that players are willing to play at other servers, WE JUST NEED MORE PLAYERS!

                            I've been seeing something great happening lately which is Roots will have 6-6 people, Speaknow will have 6-7 people and even Rage will have a few people on it. Its looking like the players are starting to not scatter but more like populate the servers more frequently, which is awesome!

                            Speaknow, Roots, Dredd, Rage and Bomber are all great, my main consern is supporting CA servers not just the ones I am in charge of (not a low blow to anyone). I would hope that in the future more players join up so nobody has to worry about finding someone to play aginst.

                              I enjoy roots, I would hope that if speaknow is being run correctly perhaps we can consolidate a main ca server, main ctf server, etc. So X is where you go for one mod, Y for another, etc.

                              What do you think phen?

                              Also maybe it might benefit us to have one ca+ server, although I don't know who's gonna host it. That mdeutrex guy, if anyone can convince him.
