attack of the health boxes

i started quake today using the gl joequake i con on my desktop and went to a saved single player game, but when it loaded alot of messiges came up at the top i dient know what they ment so i started to move. but to my suprize i saw some health boxes floating twards meand when they touched me they hurt,i also noticed that some other objects where replaced; such as a rocket launcher was quad damage, nailgun ammo was this yellow spot on the ground, shotgun ammo was fire,and there where others. i wanted to keep going to see what else had swiched but i couldent tell the enimes from other enimies or health. so i started gl joe quake directly from my flash drive [not from desktop] and i worked perfictly. but i must know why it dident work the first time.

This happens if you set deathmatch to 1 before loading a game
