  • Swing it, Baby!

Anyone ever play with the swinging grapple?

I'm mostly talking about the tricked out "Wickedhook", an evolved form of the swinging grappling hook, found wa-here: http://gamers.org/pub/idgames2/quakec/misc/wickhook.zip (Its a bit tricky sometimes, but the like is ancient, and works still. Keep trying and you'll get it, promise)

Yeah, I know it wasnt much good in claustrophobic environments. Waah. It takes more effort to learn. waaaaah. and its not so straight forward...

    .... WAAH!

Until you play slide or quake, maybe airquake maps with it.
    Then its god.

Now if there were maps MADE for this purpose... like, say, free-swinging guns-blazing combat with spires and a pit of lava at the bottom if you werent tarzan enough...Then we have an interesting game.

Try the wicked hook on a huuuuge map, like slide slide maps or quake rally maps, and play with the physics. Its. A. Blast.

    Tips for hook usage!

Yeah, its a bitch. I know.

    Obstacles
-Hook has limited range, about the distance of the first corridor on e1m1. Roughly.

-Its damn hard to move quick from a stop (about walking speed to get a momentum going. How it works, hell if I know, but you can gain momentum from a sitting start by being persistent with a direction, then letting go in a swing.)

-Hit a wall, it kills your speed. And speed is good, as long as its going up or horizontally, that is.

    Helpful things!

    - In lots of cases, you can grapple sky. Don't bitch, thats good, means you got one extra surface to tarzan offa.

-If you do a controlled pull on the chain as you enter the upward arc of the swing, you can gain speed where you'd normally lose it to gravity.

-leggo, and wait a part of a second, then launch it again, forward of where it was hooked to before (but not TOO far, you'll fall!) and contract it some. Congrats, you just tarzan-ed.

-Wanna gain height real quick? You go fastest as you near the end of the hook. So as you get near it, let go. its like a bloody catapult.

-the wickedhook has a nice feature - Stay. It defies the normal physics engine of the swinging hook, and just pulls you straight to the hook. Like the original morning star physics? Well, there you go. If you get creative with your binds, you could set up so you could do either - zoom straight to it, or swing about like a lunatic.
(for you tradition-fanatics' sakes, this is just such a bind -

    alias +zoomhook "impulse 98; wait; Impulse 94"
    alias -zoomhook "impulse 98"

for much quake enjoyment.) this feature of the hook is also useful in that its a panic escape from a swing that would deposit you in Joao - I mean lava. Use it! Prevent quaker-blorpage.

Yeah, I much prefer that hook to the standard one. I put it in Qoetia, with some significantly reworked code. You have to select it as a weapon (select axe twice) but it works off fire/alt-fire and takes over the weapon scrolling function so you can reel in and out using the mouse wheel. You loose it if you get heavy armour or weapons but in single player impulse 110 gives you it back. Combined with the axe of command and the rocket-pack in the bio-suit you can use it to air lift friendly monsters in to battle()

It takes a bit more practice than the linear hook but you can pull of some spectacular moves with it. Satan's Dark Delight, the area on DM3 and Palace of Hate all provide excellent arenas for playing Tarzan. (or Batman or Spiderman)

            Interesting.

The only thing it has over the normal hook is the hanging/reeling and the "swinging".

I have to say that the swinging is rather stupid, it defies even Quake's gravity if you pull back and back and back on the string you're hanging on. That would have to be a little tamed so you can't simply pull forever.

I also couldn't gain a lot of momentum by swinging, no comparison to the normal hook. The normal hook is also much easier to use - fire and forget.

Qoetia's version: The mousewheel reeling is good. With a little practice, this thing can be used almost like the regular hook, although personally, I'd want it as the standard offhand hook (like the morning star thingy).

Senban, I ripped this and will probably use it for RMQ, but it will be (very) different.
