Somewhere between Doom and Quake 3, id Software got it right in such a way that had never been done before and hasn't been done since.

There are other classic games -- some of them exceptional that rise almost to the level of Quake -- but none that at the end of the day actually come within 3 steps of where the original Quake lands.

The game that launched 1000 mods.

    That you can play.

    And not vomit.

Quake shouldn't have been popular. It doesn't play to populism. It isn't a parade of color or exotic weapons. It doesn't even have a dialog. It doesn't tell you what is going on or why.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II will always by my favorite game ever. It was the first proper game I ever got along with Quake II at the age of 7.

But my final exam is tomorrow so i'll be playing Quake properly and although at the moment i've only played the first two levels of Episode 1, i already think its better than most new games today.

I think the problem is people these days demand graphics to be as realitic as possible. I have played many games where the graphics are greatly improved over the original game but the gameplay is absolute tripe.

If they make a game for the PlayStation 3 with PlayStation 2 graphics, but still fill the disc up with state of the art gameplay, i'd prefer that.

Going back to Quake, compared to Dark Forces 1 or Doom, Quake was a massive jump in graphics and game play. I think the gaming bussiness was building up to 1996 - 1999 where it was at its best but then come the 21st century and everything went down the shits. Only now in 2009 are we getting games with great graphics and superb game play (Killzone 2).

I get what you're saying. Small nitpick: It does tell you what's going on, just it does so prior to the game and only if you look for it (in a text or pdf file).

The game itself includes hints, such as the grunts, crates and techy slipgates lost in the otherwise otherworldly maps. It's not intrusive, though, ie you have the option to not care for that. It's the story of a military expedition gone wrong, which is a pretty good and timeless story, and could theoretically be easily expanded upon by mods.

About the "why", you're right again, but sadly it's pretty universally understood why military expeditions go wrong. Basic topic of human existence and history. What I'm saying is, it's not hard to imagine.

The only more straightforward story is that of an invasion (DOOM).

Half-life's story is similar (invasion), but quite a bit more intrusive (people coming up and talking to you all the time).

DOOM3's story is simple, too, but the gameplay and environments are different, and the splattered blood seems mostly like an added effect. It's telling that many people liked the short "Hell" interlude the best.

Quake 2's story, again, is similar to Quake's - military expedition gone wrong. Just without the part where your own guys are transformed and fighting you. Supposedly the Strogg are (partly) ex-humans, but it just isn't very believable. Q2 also overshoots the target - they turned it into a war game, with the radio transmissions, plane fly-bys, robot or tank-like enemies etc. It's just very noisy compared to Quake. The objectives you get can pretty much be ignored, though, just like Quake's shallow backstory. The only intrusive element is the *BLEEP* "Computer updated" which is so well-hated by many.

Q4 and Quake Wars take the wargame approach to its logical conclusion. Sign of the times? War was inescapable on the mainstream media during the last ten years, at least. A constant bombardment. It's almost like WW3, only different from what everybody imagined it would be like. Politics and media portrayed "the enemy" (Taliban, al Quaeda, Muslims) as "aliens" - remember Bush's "enemy without a face, whose only faith is hate" speech - seems logical that wargames with faceless enemies would prosper. Good opportunity to show off engine technology, too. But I digress.

Quake just gave you a very shallow, run of the mill backstory, and spawned you in a base full of soldiers that were apparently brainwashed, but after this short, "flash"-like intro, you were on your own, in the dimension of the doomed. In another world with its own inhabitants and rules and magic that were hidden to you. With a godlike, incomprehensible mastermind who controlled it according to those invisible rules. Apart from the occasional sign of military screw-up you'd encounter, which was mostly decoration and always optional to look at, you were the alien in their world.

You're pretty small in Quake, as a character. You have no army to help you. No comrades. You're not defending your homeworld. You're infiltrating and uncovering someone else's. Because the only way out is forward. You're the villain, the outlaw.

that is the problem with most games these days, the creativity isn't there. there is drawn out cut scenes, slow laggy over the top graphics, and no fast paced action. a prime example is sliding Doom 3 next to Doom 1 or 2. the original games had no bullshit, it was all about going in there and laughing in the face of hell as you blow through it. in Doom 3 however, they go as far as giving you a flashlight to whack demons with in the dark. BORING. I want awesome music and on your seat action. I just beat all 6 episodes of Wolfenstien 3D on I am Death incarnate, but I will never dare to play the new one.

which leads to another thing to point out, "hard" settings on newer games. back when ID was in its prime, if you chose say Nightmare on Quake(the only way I ever play it). they would place monsters in places you wouldn't expect, you could pass a hall and a hellknight could be in the dark behind you. you could pick up a key and two shamblers would spawn. in newer games, they just give the enemies more health or make your weapons weaker. BORING. I don't want to just stand in one place firing at an enemy causing me to yawn, I want to keep my eyes peeled and blast through a ton of enemies.

as far as Doom and Quake go. the last good Doom game was Doom 64, it combined the creepy feel of Quake with ambient music and still had the same fast action the original Dooms had to offer. the last good Quake game is obviously Quake II, kick ass soundtrack, great weapons, great textures, and a nice storyline. Quake 4 just felt like Doom 3. I know a lot of you like Quake III Arena, but I never really got too into it for some reason. it feels weird for me. Quake and Quakeworld will always be king! =]

The intro to Quake and the above the bar soundtrack (sure, games had used real bands in games like Soundgarden, [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xr2hwYSxytk]RoadRash 3DO[/ame] being the earliest incarnation of Music stuffed into a videogame, some genius decided to outsource the theme music, which just made quake 10 times more sexier when it was on display.

(Quake and new flashy PC's was on display everywhere,WalMart,K-Mart,local computer stores, etc)

Question, are the people buying Quake from Steam or iD Store getting the NiN music that the original disc has or had to offer, I recently seen people mentioning soundtrack music issues and I am more curious as to if the soundtrack has been removed from the original property quake.

I got a music issue but I think i've found the solution. Something called the MSCDEX isn't loaded which I think is why the NiN music off the disc doesnt work.

I got the orignal disc with the 10 NiN tracks. I got it on iTunes along with the tracks from Dissolution, Armagon, Quake II, Reckoning and Ground Zero.

I'm going to try and load MSCDEX and see if that will fix the problem. I found this out when I load the game on DOS, just before i get to the demo. Of course your not talking about the DOS version so it might be different. But its worth a look into.
