The Shambler is one of the toughest enemies in a game i have ever come across, they eat a ton of ammo and their attack is impossible to dodge and you gotta find cover. I've been playing Quake on Hard and the few Shamblers you come across in the first episode all gave me a hard time.
Their the combination of the Tank Commander and Gladiator and Mutant (the three toughest enemies from Quake II not counting the bosses). Its great because it keeps you on your toes. But they arnt even the most dangerous buggers, those damned Fiends kill me even more times.
This is one of the things I like about Quake. In most games you kill an endless line of simple enemies with the odd strongling now and again. But even the common enemies in the game like the Ogres and Knights can be the end of you if your not completly alert.
I reached Episode 2 and fighting those Enforcers with the wimpy Shotgun was a massive set back but thankfully you do get the Super Shotgun back before you reach the slipgate. I'm just afraid I'll meet a Shambler before I get the Perforeta. *gulp*
