A Guide to defeating Shub-Niggurath, codename: Quake

The Demon Mother on her own is not a fighter, making her not as good as the Skaarj Queen who not only mothers the Skaarj Army but is also a powerful fighter in her own right.

Nevertheless the battle to kill Shub is a difficult one if you've grown to hate fighting the Shamblers and Vores.

Part 1- Swimming with the Fishes

    Shub-Niggurath awaits you

At the start you shall fall into a pool of water with about five Rotfish, and like starting the episodes, you will only have the Shotgun, but if you need anything bigger to kill the Rotfish then quit the game and never return.

Gun down the Rotfish and swim down the tunnel and shoot the last Rotfish. Wait for the steel bars to lower and swim up to the surface and kill the Scrag. Collect the Super Shotgun and ammo but return to the water to collect the Lightning Gun. Enter the lava portal to reach Shub-Niggurath.

Part II- Shamblers, Vores and Traps

If you lost a bit of health against the Scrag and Rotfish, try to avoid picking up the health packs here since you will need them for the next bit. Follow the path, taking note of the spiked ball which flies past, and collect all the ammo and guns.

When the path opens out to the pool of lava, youll Shub and a Shambler sit on the platform. Although the Rocket Launcher is 50% less effective against Shamblers, I prefer to use it against this one because no matter how long it takes, you can easily take cover from its attack (and it gives you more nails and cells for where it matters in the next part).

As soon as the Shambler dies, a door opens leading onwards, run away from the door and take cover, with your Lightning Gun ready. About four to six Shamblers will drop down and come after you so make every cell count. Use the Super Nail Gun when out of cells but if you see a Vore at the front, switch to the Rocket Launcher to take it out, being alert to its attack.

Once youre sure youve killed all the Shamblers and Vores in this area, continue on, collect the Ammo, take a look at the Shub and be careful of the traps. Remember to take the cells which are hidden right next to the lava.

As you walk along the path youll meet a couple more Shamblers and Vores so take them out with the Lighting Gun (more Cells ahead) and Super Nail Gun when you run out of Cells again.

    Part III- Final Showdown

After one more trap, youll see a portal. Walk carefully towards and a Vore may or may not appear. It seems to be a glitch which might stop the Vore from teleporting in front of you. If the Vore does appear, kill it how you choose and then watch the spiked ball flying around the arena.

When the ball flies into Shub, enter the portal and you should see a close up of Shub in pain before exploding. Youll be standing in her place, Telefrag baby! Read the message and then thats it, youve defeated Quake, both the monster and the game.

(Note: Sometimes when Shub explodes, a Vore appears and starts to attack the CGI model of you standing there with an axe. This might be the Vore that doesnt appear at the end before the portal or it might be one that should have exploded with the Shub, as with the Chthon, its explosion is actually Shamblers exploding so the Shubs death is probably a load of Vores exploding. So this Vore that appears with you in Shubs place is probably a script error).

That was my guide to defeating Shub-Niggurath, codename: Quake.

    Nicely done!

Although in my opinion that woefully lazy level doesn't really deserve such comprehensive analysis. The whole map was total nonsense! It was as if the developers ran out of time...

It was actually a step DOWN from Doom2's sinister wallpaper of PURE EVIL- at least its hidden placeholder-object actually spawned its own monsters.

It was rather disappointing- if she at least did something she would have been pretty awesome. And of course cut the teleporting spiked football puzzle- it would have made sense (well, ignoring the fact that it's a flying football that passes through all matter) if teleporting into it at ANY other time didn't involve a one-way trip into the lake of fire!

I've actually gone about drawing up a new theme-replacement-ish monster because of her.

It could have been better, but it is different compared to anything else in all the games of the world and its something that makes Quake unique.

        I suppose

By the way, do you notice that id rarely actually DOES do conventional boss fights in their games (that is, where you directly fight it)?
        For example:
        Wolf3d- yes
Doom1- Cyberdemon and Spiderdemon (otherwise the baron Duo)
Doom2- none (use former bosses as normal monsters, normal monsters as bosses (Mancubus arena), and Icon of Sin- which technically, doesn't fight the player)
Quake- none (1 puzzle boss that fights the player, and one puzzle with an aesthetic boss in it)- and two vore duos.
Quake 2- 2 mini-bosses (that reappear as ordinary monsters later in the game) and 1 double-boss (Makron + the Jorgen steed)
        Quake 3- er, tougher bots??
Doom3- 2 real bosses, 1 partial puzzle boss (Guardian- you stay away from him and fight his seekers, and quickly shoot his glowing thing in his back), and one end-boss that you don't actually fight and in turn rarely ever shoots anything at you...

Come to think of it- in Quake1, the only real boss fights were made by other companies or modders..

Don't know if it was your point or not, but its a fairly well known fact that quake was rushed out the door kicking and screaming.

vestigal code (mpuff), unimplemented features (reloading), a few ugly hacks..

but I think thats a blessing in disguise, because it makes for a leaner meaner shooter.

in most games the enemies are quite weak so i've always liked a good boss to give me a challenge.

example, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

the toughest |common| enemy takes just two hits with the lightsaber but then you have the Dark Jedi, the last one, Jerec is very difficult and even though i'm an Ace at completing the the game 100% on Hard, Jerec is still an unbelievebaly difficult enemy and i still cant be beat him without dieing many times. so i like Jerec because its fun to be in a epic lightsaber duel with him that can take 10 minutes sometimes.

in Quake, both Shub and Chthon are easy when you take them on 1on1 but Quake makes up for it by filling the levels with difficult and very difficult common enemies. Ogres, Death Knights, Vores, Shamblers and Spawns. Thats the diffenrece between the two games.

Yeah- I remember an interview with Romero where he explained the reason the game had like, 5 tarbabies was because they thought of him late in development and didn't have time to tone him down so they only put a few of them in.
As far as I'm concerned, it's still reasonably solid and it has encouraged a lot of modding.

Yeah- personally you can't beat generally hard direct boss fights- my favs- in no particular order (all Quake1 save the last)
              -Armagon
-Q-Zone's Snapper (it looks like a small red teapot but it is NASTY opponent- runs almost as fast as the player, spewing chips at you- so you have to backstrafe while dodging at the same time (don't back into a corner either))
-Kona's tweaked Nehahra Baron mini-bosses/heavy monsters
-Quoth Gugs (they really do live up to the mean reputation their authors give them)
              -Quoth Vermis
-The Anaconda (it was silly and easy- but still fun)
-Black Widow (from Quake 2- Ground Zero)

              Honourable mentions
-Nehahra from Nehahra- was actually pretty easy- although a few tweaks on his attacks and he would have been a nasty one.
-Technically not a boss- but hard as hell- Quoth Eliminators (Plasma enforcers- so tough a room with a few of these guys ranks above most boss fights)

What's cool is all of the above are about major strafing and using cover- and you can't simply rely on one alone.
Also, they're not overly- powered, have attacks that you can't avoid and are just supposed to wear the brunt of it, or do something annoying/cheap like bot-strafing or throw up an invincibility shield periodically.

The Black Widow Guardian (shes given me some nightmares)

Before I got Quake II: Ground Zero, i was already a Quake II Veteran, able to complete it on Hard with no problem. I recently did The Reckoning on Hard too so of course i had to do Ground Zero on Hard too.

Like the other two Quake II games, i didnt find it too difficult, just the Turrets gave me some problems. But then come the Widow's Layer. I was looking forward to completing the game and defeating the Widow (at this point i had no idea what it was going to be like).

Her first form wasnt too much, similar to the Markon with her Rail Gun and Hyper Blaster. Only hard thing about it was the shit load of Stalkers. Anyway i beat her and i felt so proud.

But when she returns, I spent a whole HOUR in real life time fighting Widow and dieing. On her own with her Plasma Laser and Homing Energy Balls (very similar to the Voreballs) she was unbelievbly difficult but the fight was made impossible since there was always a bunch of Stalkers everywhere.

I had to restart the level once or twice because i saved the game just before she killed me. I filled the save table up with saves of this battle, trying to hit her a few times then save, hit her and save, slowly wearing her down.

I finally found the row of Cells along the far wall and had an idea. At the start of the level i had a fully charged BFG so I saved it for Widow's 2nd form and just kept shooting her with the BFG. Then when i ran out of Cells, i collected the new ones at the wall and unloaded more BFG balls on her. Then when they ran out, i used a single rail gun shot which killed her.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the Black Widow Guardian was one of the most difficult enemies i have ever met on a game. Fucking Amazing.

                    Hell I'll say-
To be honest I could take on any of the other Quake 2 monsters in my sleep- as long as you jump out, shoot and take cover- or circle-strafe- you can avoid getting hit altogether as most of the enemies have such long fire-delays or simply can't aim. I've been able to use this for every monster even up to the bosses and Makron himself.
Plus, once you've bulked up on armour, stimpacks, adrenaline packs along the course of the game, you can afford to get hit even by the Gladiator's railgun a few times.

Come the Black Widow- even in Coop with infinite respawn she still manages to be intensely hard (honestly the only way I've beaten her)!

Apparently the trick to beating her is to fire up Quad Damage AND Double-damage at the same time.

yeh like i said, for the most part, Ground Zero is pretty easy because for the most part the strogg are easy.

but the Widow makes the Markon look like a bleedin Parasite.

by the sounds of things, you havnt even beaten her in single player.

but am not having a go, like i said it took me a whole hour of trial and error to beat her and i stand by on what i said about her being one of the most difficult enemies in any game ever.

once you've killed her its a simple walk to the Gravity Well where you plant the bomb.

                          Well, with cheats...
Of course I haven't tried the Double/Quad combo- although IMO it's almost the same thing.
