  • Top Reasons You Play Quake

    1. Quake is like Cocaine. That first "hit" was so great, I keep trying to chase that "high".

    2. And because Dredd.Quakeone.Com has that "first hit" (rotating maps that I don't know, creating the original feeling of playing Quake).

    3. Because fragging you motherfuckers if fun.

    4. Because there's nothing like the timer running to 00:33 seconds left in a Capture The Flag match, being at the enemy base, score is 200-212, and I know we can Capture it in 10-15 seconds.

    5. Because in any given match, for 20 minutes the world around me vanishes. Not now chief, I'm in the fucking zone.

    6. Because it's a good reason to try to get the girlfriend to give you a blowjob. "Baby, it's always been my fantasy to get some head while playing my favorite game!" Note: This line only works once.

    7. Because this is what I went to college for.

    8. And Middle School.

    9. And High School.

    10. Because Quake is my job, work is my hobby.

The possibilities of Quake inspire my imagination, versus other games which drive a nail into the coffin of my imagination.

Ever since I learned of Quake, I've wanted more and in other games I see the failed promise of the "forgotten future" that would never be.

Except I believe in that forgotten future. I think others do too. And I am not here to remember that forgotten future, but to make it a reality. Not alone as I don't have that power.

But to keep the charcoal burning on a fire that wants to go out -- knowing that piece of charcoal, in my mind, has the destiny of setting the world ablaze.

So I wait here patiently and calmly for something. It is a something that I do not know, do not see and do not expect.

But the important thing is that some of us are waiting ...

Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

You know, I'll drink to that one.

This, people is one reason why Quake stands head and shoulders above the competition. It came out and suddenly everything was possible. It didn't have to be Quake, any game could have done it at the right time, but it was Quake that did it.

Since then all we've had is a succession of increasingly bland shooters pumping up the military/sci-fi theme to it's logical and inevitable rigid and unimaginative conclusion. But Quake was the one that let people let their own imaginations run riot. Amen.

Modern shooters aren't so bad. They're just limited by the effort it takes to make them.

A game with "only" techbase and a single monster set seems to be hard enough to make (Q4 for example). A new Quake would need several themes and several monster subsets. And top notch multiplayer.

I don't know what Q4 cost to make. I'm not sure I want to know. I don't think anybody would want to invest four times as much into a game.

The Quake 4 thread at func is pretty enlightening.

I have a lot of pretty close friends that hang out on Quake. Runequake and FvF have things to offer no other games do. I've always liked RA, and even though CA is pretty bland I like to play with the big dogs and see how I stack up. At least I'm not the worst... heh. I usually end up somewhere in the middle of the scoreboard.
