This will be my final thread since there is no more bosses in Quake to talk about.
Introduction: I've heard a few times that people seem to have a problem with this fight, because it just isnt right for some reason. I know for one, our King Hazza, is one of the people who hates the battle with the Dragon.
But I honestly did enjoy this fight. I once stated my favorite enemy in any game was Jerec because he is so damned hard to beat (the dragon doesnt get my vote for best boss) but it was fun and it was difficult and so i think the Dragon is one of my favorite bosses.
The Dragon: Like I said before this fight was hard, i think it was the hardest fight in all three Quake1 games. The enemies you can compare the Dragon too are Shamblers, Vores, Armagon, Wraths and the Overlord and none of them come close to matching the Dragon (maybe Armagon if he is constantly using his rocket spasms).
The Dragon spends the entire fight flying above the arena whilst lauching its attacks when your in his line of sight. He will very rarely hover in mid air but when he does you can bet he'll launch an attack.
The Dragon has two attacks, Fire Breath and Lightning Breath. Each attack launches up too three balls of fire or lightning and although each attack doesnt have much in the way of splash damage, it does deal a tonne of damage if you get hit directly and since you'll be watching where your going and the speed that he fires and the attack flies through the air, I bet you'll be hit sqar in the face a few times. As well as dealing high damage, the attacks can knock you into the lava which will either deal more damage or just kill you.
The Arena: The arena is a oval shape room with a pool of lava in the middle. With rock platforms to jump on to get out of the lava and a bridge going acorss it. Either side there is a ledge to get the higher ground although even here your still below the Dragon. It is by no means a difficult map to learn but there are EarthQuakes which although arnt too bad if your at the sides of the arena, can be trouble if your on the platforms or the bridge, right at the ledge of the pool.
The Fight: The goal is to shoot the Dragon until he explodes in one of the most impressive gibbings in the game.
A few things to think about whilst fighting him, he fires his attacks out his mouth so in order for him to attack, his head has to be facing you. So make every attempt to keep behind him.
When ever he is flying away from you or turning round, try to hug the wall so you can keep moving so that you stay behind him but also so you can actully look up and attack him whilst avoiding falling into the lava.
If he does face turn round to face you, stop your attack and try to run away as fast as possible. If possible, keep an eye on him so you know when your no longer in his eyeline. When he lauches his attack and your not ready to get away or your just at an angle that makes getting out of the way in time impossible, be prepared to loose alot of health and be blasted across the map.
The damage you recieve is dependant on how close you are to the blast and how many balls he fires. Sometimes I could loose less than 50 armour/health points but sometimes I could loose over 150 health/armour points.
There is a MegaHealth, PowerShield and Anti-Grav Belt in the arena. The MegaHealth and PowerShield will be of great help but the Anti-Grav Belt is just annoying. It might serve to jump away from some of the Dragon's attacks but its annoying when your trying to pick up some ammo and its taking you 5 seconds to float down to get it. Besides once its run out, you realise you dont need it anyway. I'd pick it up anyway so its out the way and use what limited advantage it gives you but dont worry when it drains out, its for the best.
Conclusion: The Dragon is the most difficult enemy in Quake but not as difficult as Quake II's Black Widow Guardian (from ground zero). King Hazza stated it hardly attacks but to be honest, if it attacks any more frequant than it does, it'd be impossible to beat.

This is the Final Boss from Dissolution of Eternity (Quake Mission Pack #2)
P.S
I'm just wandering but to the people who have Quake (original disc and big box) does your cd case cover look like this?

I'm just wandering becasue mine doesnt say Quake at the top, it just has the logo then id's logo in the bottom left hand corner. Thanks for any replies.
Also i'm going to put a picture of my chair on the Radec's Chair thread next week when i bring it home. Sorry for the delay.
Hope you enjoyed reading my guide to beating the Dragon.
