If you mean engine, try Darkplaces with Rygel's texture pack, and turn realtime lighting on.

As for Quake mod, one isn't better than the other, it all falls on personal preference. I like FvF - Future vs Fantasy, pretty much super singleplayer with 13 playable classes (Quake Soldier, Cyborg Camper, Laser Android, Sniper, Fighter, Mage, Ninja, Cleric, Wasteland Warrior, Monk, DooM Marine, and the 2 special classes Time Traveler and Alien which you only get if you get the artifact or if you manage to get 999 frags) and different weapons for each. It can also be played in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Purge (Team Deathmatch where you have to capture and hold the altar, where the Artifact of Divinitivity spawns. Pick up the artifact to become Diety, and grant your team different benefits)

I also like Runequake. It's basically free for all Deathmatch with the hook and a bunch of runes that grant you certian abilities when you pick them up. Take up to 666 health, become invincible for 3 seconds on command, place death traps that instantly gib anyone who walks into them, or blow yourself up along with anyone else not behind a barrier like a wall, and many more. There are also alt weapons like the BFG, gas grenades, time bombs etc. Unfortunately, most Runequake players love to play on small, spammy maps that can be won by simply tossing gas grenades everywhere. Also, there are players (like Scoffer) who will call you out that you're a cheater if you are more than slightly better than him.

I also like CA - Clan Arena. Start with 200 red armor, all weapons and a certian allotment of ammo and team up. The objective is to be the last one (or ones if you're on the same team) standing.

There's a multitude of other mods but I don't really care for anything else (that's active at least). I used to love the Slide mod but it's totally dead... there's not even a place to download it that I know of.

I wouldn't listen to this guy too much. He's commonly known as "Kimp". Nothing wrong with DM if that's what you like, but he's making it appear that DM is the best there is, which doesn't suprise me because he runs around to any populated server he can find to try to recruit players for his little DM games and when he doesn't get his way he throws a fit like a child.

hahaha ya!, two servers your not banned from yet, with "yet" being the keyword. Kimp, quit trying to get people to these servers you have nothing to do with. The DM community has spoken and your not wanted so, just stop it already and go play another game. It's really been nice not playing with you and i mean that with the up most sincerity.

The most advanced mod is really your own preference, a lot of players like CAx, it's fast paced, fun and challenging with movement, speed and the element of surprise. Others seem to like Runequake, its a fun mod at times and the game gets more and more interesting with how good you can use your hook and know the runes. Those seem to be the most popular mod's at the moment. Don't listen to kimp (cometx77) for he is a quake weasel and deserves to be shot.
